A Dark Song

• Liam Gavin shot his debut feature in roughly 20 days on a budget of about $50,000, leaning on a single confined location and a two-hander cast - Steve Oram as the occultist Joseph Solomon and Catherine Walker as Sophia - to keep the scope inside the money.
• The single house onscreen is a stitch-up of two real places, but the reverse of how it's often described: interiors were shot in a semi-abandoned mansion sitting inside a North Dublin housing estate, while the Wicklow countryside doubled for the rural North Welsh exteriors, with production based around Dublin and Wicklow in the summer of 2015.
• The ritual is the real Abramelin operation drawn from The Book of Abramelin, the same rite Aleister Crowley attempted and abandoned; Gavin had been fascinated by Crowley and the occult since his early teens, and he compressed the historical year-to-eighteen-month process down to about eight months on screen.
• Out of superstition and respect for the actual practice, Gavin had the production deliberately alter the sigils and symbols and avoided depicting the operation's true steps, so nothing onscreen functions as a working instruction.
• The film was backed by Bord Scannan na hEireann (the Irish Film Board) and Ffilm Cymru Wales as an Irish-Welsh co-production - the majority of the money came from Ireland, the Welsh side via Ffilm Cymru - and it's set in the rural North Welsh hinterlands, where Gavin himself is from.
• Catherine Walker's performance as Sophia earned her a 2017 Irish Film & Television Awards nomination for Best Actress in a Lead Role - Film.

Sophia's stated goal is a lie she tells Solomon and herself. She claims she wants to speak to her dead son, and only late does the real ask surface: the power to forgive the boys who killed him. Read that way, the entire ordeal is grief therapy disguised as sorcery, with the ritual's deprivation functioning as the only thing harsh enough to crack her open. The magic is real, but the cure was always interior.

The whole operation can be read as folie a deux, two damaged people validating each other's delusion, right up until it isn't. Solomon is a fraud and a drunk who fudges steps, and most of the film withholds proof the rite works at all. The cellar threats and the final guardian angel either confirm the supernatural or reveal how completely Sophia has dissociated. The film stays balanced on that knife until the last reel forces a choice.

Solomon's death and Sophia's mercy reframe him as a necessary sacrifice rather than a villain. His cruelty isn't sadism for its own sake; the Abramelin demands an unbroken chain of suffering and faith, and his failures of discipline are what summon the lower spirits that maim him. He pays the toll so she can reach the threshold, making the brute the closest thing the story has to a martyr.

Sealed inside a rented country house with a circle she can't cross, Sophia endures escalating ritual abuse while chasing one thing she won't admit: not revenge, but contact. What climbs up from the cellar to answer isn't what either of them bargained for. Patient, punishing process-horror that treats magic as grueling manual labor with a body count.
