A Field in England

• Shot for roughly £300,000 in just 12 days, entirely in a single field in the Surrey countryside outside Guildford, with a cast and crew of fewer than 40 people. The whole production fit inside what most features spend on catering.
• On 5 July 2013 it became the first British film released the same day across cinemas, DVD, video-on-demand, and free television (the Film4 channel) at once, a distribution experiment backed by the BFI that pulled in over 367,000 viewers despite a tiny 17-screen theatrical footprint.
• Wheatley and cinematographer Laurie Rose made the call to shoot in black-and-white spontaneously, studying Peter Watkins' Culloden and 60s-70s arthouse to nail the unfussy, documentary-grimy texture.
• It opens with a genuine photosensitivity warning ahead of its hallucinogenic mushroom sequence, a strobing, mirrored, kaleidoscopic freefall built to physically disorient the viewer rather than just suggest a bad trip.
• Reece Shearsmith improvised the film's most disturbing beat. The script had Whitehead stagger out of O'Neil's tent shocked and stunned; Shearsmith instead came out wearing a demented ear-to-ear grin to show the character's mind had simply snapped, and Wheatley kept it.
• It screened in competition at the 48th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July 2013, where it won the Special Jury Prize, written and co-edited by Wheatley's wife and regular collaborator Amy Jump.

• The field itself may represent a liminal space between life and death, or even a purgatorial realm where the characters are trapped in a cycle of violence and futile quests—a metaphor for the futility of war and human ambition.

• The alchemist O'Neil could symbolize the corrupting influence of knowledge and power, with his obsession for treasure mirroring humanity's destructive pursuit of material or esoteric gain, regardless of the cost.

• The mushroom circle, a recurring motif in folklore, may signify a gateway to the supernatural or a conduit for the field's latent malevolence, suggesting that the characters' descent into madness is not entirely self-inflicted but influenced by external forces.

• The film's ambiguous ending—where the survivors emerge from the field but remain psychologically scarred—implies that the true horror is not the treasure or the field itself, but the irreversible damage wrought by trauma and complicity.

• Some interpretations posit that the characters are already dead, their journey through the field a metaphorical representation of their souls processing guilt and betrayal from their past lives during the Civil War.

Mid-1640s, somewhere in the churn of the English Civil War. Four men peel away from a battle they want no part of and stumble into a hedgerow that won't let them leave. Among them is Whitehead, an alchemist's craven assistant, who gets pressed into service by O'Neil, a smiling Irish brute convinced gold is buried under the grass. A circle of mushrooms supplies dinner and dismantles everyone's sanity. What the field actually wants has nothing to do with treasure, and the men become tools for digging it up.
