PLOT
  • Special-effects man Carlo Rambaldi built the gutted, twitching dogs for the lab nightmare so convincingly that Fulci was hauled into Italian court on animal-cruelty charges facing two years in prison. Rambaldi presented the animatronic dogs in the courtroom to prove they were rubber armatures covered in coyote skin, likely the first time an effects artist had to defend his work as fake in front of a judge.
  • Rambaldi went on to win three Academy Awards for the creatures in King Kong (1976), Alien (1979), and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). The same hands that built E.T. built the disemboweled dogs that nearly jailed Fulci.
  • American distributor AIP retitled the film 'Schizoid' for its US release and hacked it apart. Their cut ran about 95 minutes against a roughly 104-minute complete version, making it the most heavily censored release the film got anywhere, sliced for both sex and violence.
  • The bat-attack setpiece, where Carol is cornered in a church attic, is a deliberate Hitchcock homage built off The Birds. Star Florinda Bolkan insisted real bats were used, but on the Blu-ray extras Rambaldi says they were models and even produces one to prove it.
  • Ennio Morricone scored it, junking the lyrical melodies of his westerns for dissonant jazz, funk, harpsichord, electric guitar, and Edda Dell'Orso's wordless vocals over brassy Swinging-London cues.
  • The London climax was shot at Alexandra Palace in north London, with the chase staged through the building's vast interior; Woburn Abbey also served as a location.
