A Quiet Place in the Country

• The film is adapted from Oliver Onions' 1911 ghost story 'The Beckoning Fair One,' with a story credit shared by Petri and Tonino Guerra (Antonioni's longtime writer on L'Avventura and Blow-Up) — they first drafted it back in 1962, years before it reached the screen; Luciano Vincenzoni later joined Petri on the final screenplay.
• Petri brought in American pop artist Jim Dine to create the abstract canvases that stand in for Leonardo's work. Dine made the paintings on set and was filmed doing it so Franco Nero could study and copy his physical gestures on camera — the two produced roughly a dozen works each during the shoot.
• The score is a genuine collaboration between Ennio Morricone and Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, the avant-garde collective Morricone played in — dissonant prepared piano, electronics, and concrete sounds that mirror Leonardo's unraveling, rather than a conventional melodic score. It was the only time Morricone and the group co-signed a soundtrack.
• Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave were a real-life couple while shooting it; they'd met on Camelot in 1967, and Redgrave gave birth to their son Carlo Gabriel in September 1969, the year the film hit the festival circuit.
• It won a Silver Bear at the 19th Berlin International Film Festival, held June 25 to July 6, 1969.
• Editing is by Ruggero Mastroianni — Marcello's brother and one of Italian cinema's top cutters — with cinematography by Luigi Kuveiller, who'd later shoot Argento's Deep Red. The film opened in Italy on November 14, 1968 and grossed roughly 387 million lire.

Leonardo Ferri, a Milanese painter sick of watching his canvases get priced, framed, and sold by his lover-manager Flavia, flees to a crumbling villa in the Veneto countryside to work in peace. Peace doesn't come. The house belonged to Wanda, a young woman killed during the war, and Leonardo's fixation on her ghost curdles into jealous erotic obsession. Petri keeps the camera locked inside Leonardo's splintering head, so the haunting and the breakdown become impossible to pry apart. By the end, the line between possession and psychosis has dissolved completely.
