PLOT
- Shot for $318,000, scraped together from a small grant plus money from Prowse and Lee's own families and friends, then it out-punched its budget by passing for a far pricier production and drew constant comparisons to the $12-million Chronicle.
- The first-time directors filmed over a roughly 30-day schedule (26 of 31 days on location) with a tiny Canadian crew of about seven people total - DP, makeup artist, a sound guy who doubled as editor, plus the two leads - and that minimal footprint is exactly what let them blow the saved money on actual on-location shooting in Paris, Barcelona and Italy instead of faking Europe back in Vancouver.
- The film began life as a planned web series in the Lonelygirl15 / Marble Hornets mold; the in-movie travel blog 'Ends of the Earth' is a leftover from that concept. Lee and Prowse landed on vampirism specifically because the genre usually gets the stylized, romanticized treatment and they wanted to drag it into a grounded handheld frame.
- The standout gag - a near-unbroken first-person take of Derek hurling himself out a window and onto the street below - was built from real practical stunt rigging (including a 110-foot crane that launched a stunt double in an Italian town) blended with VFX and stitched together, and the Blu-ray breaks it down in a featurette literally called 'Anatomy of a Scene: The Window Jump.'
- It cleaned up on the festival circuit: a Special Jury Citation for Best Canadian First Feature at TIFF 2013, a Maria Award for Best Special Effects at Sitges, and a sweep of Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay in the Horror Features category at Austin's Fantastic Fest.
- Despite the hardware and acclaim, the theatrical run was tiny - it grossed about $121,200 domestically (roughly $175,000 worldwide) after opening on just 44 screens - making it a textbook case of a found-footage film that earned its reputation on disc and streaming rather than at the box office.
