• Paddy Chayefsky adapted his only novel here, then disowned the result and stripped his name off the credits, replacing it with the pseudonym 'Sidney Aaron' (his actual first and middle names) after open war with Ken Russell over how his dense dialogue was delivered.
• Arthur Penn originally directed and cast both William Hurt and Blair Brown, but resigned in November 1978 during rehearsals after clashing with Chayefsky. Russell, reportedly far down the candidate list after Spielberg and Kubrick passed, inherited the picture.
• It was William Hurt's feature debut, and five-year-old Drew Barrymore's first film as Margaret Jessup, two years before E.T. made her a household name.
• The film ran roughly $15 million with about $4 million spent on effects, and grossed near $19.9 million domestically. Russell fired effects man John Dykstra and handed the visual effects to Bran Ferren.
• Makeup artist Dick Smith refined his air-bladder technique here, hiding inflatable rigs under prosthetic skin to make flesh ripple and mutate on camera. Blair Brown's glowing 'anatomy suit' veins were painted with Scotch-Lite and shot via front projection, and dancer Miguel Godreau performed the ape-man regression form.
• John Corigliano's score was his first for film and earned an Oscar nomination, alongside a nomination for Best Sound, at the 53rd Academy Awards. The story draws directly on neuroscientist John C. Lilly's real isolation-tank and psychedelic experiments.

Jessup's quest is dressed as science but plays as a man trying to outrun the human condition itself. The tank, the mushroom, the regression, they're all attempts to reach a state before grief, before doubt, before self. The horror isn't the ape-man; it's that when he finally touches the 'truth' at the bottom, it's a screaming void of nothing, and the only thing that pulls him back is the very emotional attachment he was running from.

Read it as an addiction parable and every beat lines up. Jessup chases bigger doses for diminishing returns, lies to the people who love him, isolates inside the tank, and eventually the change fires without any substance at all, the way dependency rewires a body to crave on its own. Emily refusing to let go in the climax is less cosmic rescue than an intervention rendered as biology.

The ending's sudden reach for love as salvation can be read as Russell deliberately overriding Chayefsky's colder intellectual ending, the on-screen evidence of their feud. The clinical scientist plot spends two hours insisting the self is a chemical accident, then the camera saves him with a wife's touch, the two filmmakers' irreconcilable visions fused into one contradictory finale.

Harvard psychophysiologist Eddie Jessup wants to find the original self buried under millions of years of evolution, and he's willing to climb into a sensory-deprivation tank dosed on a Mexican tribe's hallucinogenic mushroom to do it. The visions come first. Then the body follows. Jessup starts physically regressing into a snarling proto-human, and once the change stops needing the tank or the drug, the man stops being a man at all. Only his wife's grip on his dissolving flesh stands between him and total reabsorption into primordial nothing.
