The disease economy is just fandom with the metaphor stripped off. Buying a star's cold sore to feel closer to them, eating meat grown from their cells, pirating their flu through cracked copy protection. It is parasocial obsession rendered as biology, and Syd, the dealer skimming product through his own veins, is the addict who got too close to the supply.

Syd injecting himself with the Hannah Geist sample is a consummation, not an accident. He has spent the film hollowing himself into a vessel for other people's afflictions, and merging his blood with hers is the only intimacy his world allows. The cell garden grown from her at the end suggests she never fully dies. She just gets replicated and resold, which is the real horror of being a commodity.

The relentless white sterility and Syd's worsening hallucinations frame the whole thing as bodily revolt against a culture that treats flesh as inventory. The more clinical the surfaces, the more grotesque the eruptions, arguing that no amount of corporate hygiene can package away what bodies actually do.

In a near-future where celebrity is a literal infection, Syd March works the counter at the Lucas Clinic, where rabid fans pay top dollar to be injected with the actual viruses harvested from their idols. Syd runs a side hustle, smuggling pathogens out of the lab in his own bloodstream after cracking their copy protection. When he jacks himself with a sample drawn from superstar Hannah Geist, she dies of the same bug, and Syd becomes a walking crime scene racing his own rot to find out what killed her before it finishes him.
