Apostle

• Gareth Evans built the entire Erisden settlement as a working village set at Margam Park in Neath Port Talbot, Wales, and shot the film for a budget of roughly £8.5 million as a co-production between Cardiff's Severn Screen and XYZ Films, with principal photography starting April 2017.
• Coming straight off the wall-to-wall combat of The Raid films, Evans wrote, directed AND edited Apostle himself, deliberately swapping cathartic action for violence designed to hurt rather than thrill the audience.
• Evans named the painter Caravaggio as a direct visual reference, chasing the same hard chiaroscuro of deep shadow against harsh light to load every frame with dread; the grade was finished in DaVinci Resolve and pushed toward a grainy, grimy 1970s texture modeled on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
• The folk-horror DNA is explicit: Evans cited The Wicker Man (1973), Witchfinder General (1968) and The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) as touchstones, praising how their slow burns build to a crescendo of consequence.
• The film leans hard on practical effects over CGI, including the notorious sequence where Mark Lewis Jones's enforcer Quinn hand-cranks a drill bit down through Bill Milner's skull during a 'purification' ritual.
• It premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2018 and dropped on Netflix worldwide on October 12, 2018, running roughly 129 minutes and landing a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score against a 62 Metacritic.

The starving Goddess is a literalized critique of organized religion as an extraction machine. She gave the island fertility, the founders monetized it, and now they bleed their own flock to keep production up. The failing harvest isn't her wrath, it's a business model collapsing, and the prophet's sermons about abundance are corporate spin over a dying resource. The cult doesn't fall to an outsider's faith, it falls to its own greed.

Thomas and the Goddess mirror each other as two beings hollowed out and chained by believers. His missionary trauma stripped his faith and left him a vessel for pain; she's a divine creature reduced to a caged blood-engine. His final act of mercy toward her reads less like heroism than recognition, one tortured thing freeing another, which is why the ending feels like surrender as much as salvation.

Read the soil as the real horror: Erisden is an early parable about ecological debt. The founders took more than the land could give, and the green paradise is rotting from underneath while the leadership insists everything is fine. The Goddess is just the bill coming due, and the human sacrifice is the desperate, doomed attempt to outrun a system that's already broken.

1905. Thomas Richardson, a broken man who walked away from God after a missionary disaster left him scarred inside and out, sails to the remote Welsh island of Erisden, where a religious commune is holding his sister for ransom. The colony's prophet preaches abundance, but the soil is going sour and the harvest is failing, and the reason is buried under the settlement: something old, something fed on blood. Thomas digs in undercover and finds the cult's faith isn't metaphor. The Goddess is real, she is starving, and the men running Erisden will bleed anyone to keep her quiet.
