Arrebato

• Iván Zulueta only ever finished two features, and Arrebato was the last. He was already a heroin addict before he made it and never directed another feature afterward, retreating to his family home in San Sebastián and turning down new projects for the rest of his life. The addiction in the film isn't metaphor he researched, it's the one that ate his career.
• Before and after Arrebato, Zulueta paid the bills as a poster designer. He cut the key art for Pedro Almodóvar's Labyrinth of Passion (1982) and Dark Habits (1983), and his striking 1975 poster for José Luis Borau's Furtivos is one of his most admired pieces. His posters chased the guts of a film instead of just slapping actors' faces on bright colors.
• The film tanked on release. It premiered at Madrid's Cine Azul in 1980 and lasted only about thirteen days there, then survived as a midnight movie at the Alphaville cinema for roughly a year before drifting into obscurity, the classic cult-by-neglect path.
• Pedro Almodóvar calls it his favorite horror film and championed it for decades. After Zulueta died in 2009, Almodóvar wrote a eulogy praising the film and saying Zulueta 'never filmed a single banal image.' That lifelong endorsement is a big reason it ever resurfaced.
• The central horror gimmick is mechanical, not supernatural on the surface: an interval timer wired to Pedro's Super 8 camera that fires the shutter at set intervals while he sleeps. The dread comes from the red frames that creep into the developed footage and keep multiplying, until the final reel sent to José is entirely red except for a single frame of Pedro's face that begins to move.
• It went 40-plus years with no proper U.S. theatrical run. Altered Innocence put out a 4K restoration in 2021, opening it in New York that October for its first real American theatrical release, turning a whispered-about Spanish cult title into something fans could finally see clean.

The camera isn't possessed, the addiction is. Every frame Pedro shoots maps onto a fix, the interval timer is the schedule, the red frames are the spread of dependency through the body. Read that way the 'vampire camera' is just the lie addicts tell themselves about the thing destroying them, that it's giving them something transcendent while it empties them. Zulueta lived this, which is why José and Pedro feel like two halves of one user.

Pedro is what José is becoming, and the package is a summons, not a gift. The film keeps collapsing time and space between the two men until the distinction stops mattering, suggesting the red rapture is less an external monster than a stage of surrender every devotee reaches. The final all-red reel with one frame of Pedro's face is the camera keeping its trophy, proof that the lens preserves you only by consuming you first.

It's a confession disguised as genre. The childhood toys, the obsessive replay, the hunger to freeze a moment forever, all of it reads as Zulueta diagnosing the artist's drive itself as the addiction, with heroin merely the chemical version of the same compulsion to step outside ordinary time. The horror isn't that cinema can kill you, it's that the people most enraptured by it would let it.

José Sirgado scrapes a living grinding out cheap horror pictures, numbing the boredom with heroin and an on-again-off-again relationship with Ana that he keeps poisoning. Then a parcel lands: a Super 8 reel, an audio cassette, and a door key, all from Pedro, a man-child who films himself sleeping and believes the camera is hunting him. As Pedro's narration unspools, red frames bleed into his footage and multiply, the lens devouring whoever surrenders to it. José follows the trail toward the same rapture, where the projector stops being a tool and becomes an appetite. Cinema as a needle that takes everything.
