Art of the Devil

• The Thai title is คนเล่นของ (Khon len khong), literally 'a person who plays with things' — Thai slang for someone who dabbles in black magic. Five Star Production released it on June 17, 2004, with a 96-minute runtime.
• It opened at No. 4 at the Thai box office, behind Around the World in 80 Days, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Punisher, and held that fourth spot for two more weeks before slipping to No. 5.
• The notorious eel sequence used no CGI. The crew dumped thousands of real, live eels for the scene where they erupt from a body — a practical-gore set piece the film became infamous for.
• Tanit Jitnukul directed, working from a script credited to the pseudonym 'Ghost Gypsy.' Supaksorn Chaimongkol (nicknamed 'Kratae') plays the vengeful Boom, with Tin Settachoke as her married lover Prathan.
• Boom's revenge is methodical: she first drives the second-eldest son to murder-suicide and kills Prathan, then targets his first wife Kamala and their children to seize the inheritance. Only the youngest son, Bon, and eldest daughter, Nan, survive.
• The two follow-ups — Art of the Devil 2 (2005) and Art of the Devil 3 (2008) — only share the franchise name. They're entirely different stories with new characters, not a continuation of Boom's; the 2005 sequel was made by a seven-director collective billed as the 'Ronin Team.'

The film is less a revenge tale than a karma ledger. Watch who dies: not just Prathan, but every heir, every relative who benefits from his estate. The curse doesn't target cruelty, it targets the bloodline that inherited the money — gu sorcery rewritten as a property dispute settled in viscera, where greed itself is the thing being punished.

Boom never wins, and that's the point. The gu she pays for doesn't restore her — it consumes the practitioner as surely as the victims. The 'art of the devil' is a contract that bills both parties; she trades her own ruin for theirs, so the body horror crawling out of the family is really the same rot she invited into herself the moment she walked into the dark.

The meandering reporter-and-temple subplots that critics knock aren't padding — they're the film insisting the curse can't be contained by outsiders or holy ground. Every person who steps in to investigate or atone becomes the next mouth full of razors, arguing that once gu is loosed, no institution, journalistic or religious, can close the wound it opened.

Boom is the mistress nobody planned to keep. Pregnant by a married man who first pays her off to stay quiet, then hands her over to his friends to be degraded on a beach, she walks into the rural dark and pays a sorcerer to make the whole family pay back in flesh. Insects breed in rot and crawl beneath skin; mouths give up razors; live eels erupt from torn bodies; an inheritance dispute curdles into a body count nobody can stop. Greed lit the fuse, but it's old gu magic that finishes the job, one ruined heir at a time.
