PLOT
  • First production ever granted permission to film inside the actual Paris catacombs, in both the public zones and the off-limits sections. The Dowdle brothers said some areas weren't cleared for them until about 24 hours before the cameras rolled.
  • Made on roughly a $5 million budget and grossed about $41.8 million worldwide ($21.3M domestic, $20.6M international), a strong return for a found-footage shoot.
  • Director John Erick Dowdle described the location as 200 miles of tunnels, five stories underground, holding the remains of around 6 million people. There was no electricity and no cell service down there, which killed walkie-talkies and wireless monitors.
  • Lighting was largely diegetic: the crew refused to haul in traditional film lights and let the actors illuminate scenes with their own helmet headlamps, plus a single light mounted on each handheld Red Epic camera.
  • Conditions were brutal enough that water rose to the actors' waists on some days, and co-director Drew Dowdle took a head injury underground that reportedly didn't fully heal for about six months.
  • Critics rejected it on release: a 30% Rotten Tomatoes score, a 39 on Metacritic, and a C-minus CinemaScore from opening-night audiences.
