Asylum

• Robert Bloch, who wrote the novel behind Hitchcock's Psycho, scripted Asylum by adapting four of his own published short stories ('Frozen Fear,' 'The Weird Tailor,' 'Lucy Comes to Stay,' and 'Mannikins of Horror'), and Amicus producer Milton Subotsky bolted them together with the inmate-interview wraparound.
• In the U.S. the film also circulated under the alternate release title House of Crazies.
• Composer Douglas Gamley gets the music credit, but most of the score is public-domain Modest Mussorgsky — Night on Bald Mountain runs over the opening and closing titles, with cues from Pictures at an Exhibition (including 'Gnomus' and 'The Hut on Hen's Legs') used throughout.
• The 'Frozen Fear' segment sees Richard Todd axe-murder his wealthy wife (Sylvia Syms), wrap her dismembered limbs in individual brown-paper parcels and stack them in the freezer — where a charm she wore brings them back to crawl after him one piece at a time.
• The closing 'Mannikins of Horror' bit gives Herbert Lom (as Dr. Byron) a foot-tall self-portrait doll he believes carries his own soul; the miniature rides a dumbwaiter downstairs and climbs a desk to stab the asylum's head, Dr. Rutherford, to death with a surgical lancet.
• Director Roy Ward Baker also helmed Amicus's anthology The Vault of Horror (1973) and reunited with Subotsky for the later anthology The Monster Club (1981) — making him, alongside Freddie Francis, one of the studio's go-to portmanteau directors.

The whole framing device is rigged so the audience loses the guessing game the same way Dr. Martin does. Bloch stacks the deck by making every inmate equally plausible as the vanished Dr. Starr, so the final reveal lands as a trap rather than a deduction — the asylum was never a test of skill, it was bait.

'Lucy Comes to Stay' is the film admitting its own DNA out loud. Bloch wrote that split-personality story years before Psycho, and the mirror shot where Charlotte Rampling's reflection flickers into Britt Ekland's is the same trick Norman Bates runs in long form — Asylum is Bloch recycling the engine that made him famous, and daring superfans to clock it.

The killer-doll finale reads as the film's thesis on the place itself: every patient is a will trapped in a body that won't obey, and Lom's mannikin — a soul poured into a thing that crawls, schemes and stabs — is just the literal version of what Dunsmoor does to everyone behind its doors.

A young psychiatrist, Dr. Martin, arrives at Dunsmoor, an institution for the incurably insane, and learns the cruel terms of his job interview from the wheelchair-bound Dr. Rutherford: the asylum's former head doctor, Dr. Starr, has cracked and is now hiding among his own patients. To get hired, Martin has to interview the inmates and guess which broken mind used to run the place. Each patient's story unspools into its own nightmare — a freezer full of brown-paper parcels, a tailor's glowing suit, a friend who shouldn't exist, a doll with a soul inside it — until the frame snaps shut on him.
