Bees Saal Baad

• Director Biren Nag came up through Guru Dutt's production house as an art director, shaping the look of Pyaasa (1957), Kala Pani (1958), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) before stepping behind the camera himself. This was his first film as director, and he died in 1964 leaving only one other feature, the Gothic mystery Kohraa (1964), made with the same lead pair.
• It's a loose remake of the 1951 Bengali thriller Jighansa, which lifted its bones from Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles (and drew on Hemendra Kumar Roy's novel Nishithini Bivishika) - yet there's no Sherlock Holmes, no Watson, and no actual hound anywhere in it.
• Singer Hemant Kumar didn't just compose the score and sing on the soundtrack - he produced the film through his Geetanjali Pictures banner.
• The film's signature scare is the disembodied lament 'Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil,' sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Raga Shivaranjani over Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics. Both Mangeshkar and Badayuni won Filmfare Awards for it; the film also took Filmfare trophies for editing (Keshav Nanda) and sound (S. Y. Pathak).
• It was Biswajeet's first Hindi film, cast opposite Waheeda Rehman; the pairing was popular enough that Nag reunited them for Kohraa two years later.
• It was a major commercial success, the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1962, reportedly grossing around 30 million rupees, with Marshall Braganza's fog-shrouded black-and-white swamp photography - including a recurring clawed, long-nailed hand emerging from tall grass - helping set the template for atmospheric Hindi horror.

The film weaponizes its own genre as a hit-format Hindi musical: the most beautiful song in the picture is also the bait. 'Kahin Deep Jale' floats out of the night to lure men toward the killing swamp, which means every time the audience leans in to enjoy the melody, they're sharing the victim's exact fatal impulse. Pleasure and dread run on the same track.

Strip away the ghost and what's left is a class indictment. The 'curse' is just the long memory of a landlord's crime against a powerless village girl - the supernatural is the only language a feudal town has for guilt it never punished. The real haunting is impunity, and the 'spirit' is a working man finally collecting what the law wouldn't.

Nag's art-director eye does the heavy lifting where dialogue can't: the quagmire that drowns its victims is the moral rot of the Thakur bloodline made literal. Kumar, the innocent grandson, has to physically cross that geography of ancestral sin to earn a clean ending - the land itself is keeping the family's books.

Twenty years after a Thakur's crime against a village girl drives her to her death, his grandson Kumar returns to the fog-choked town of Chandangarh, where a killing quagmire swallows the careless and a woman's voice drifts out of the dark singing a song that nobody living seems to be singing. Bodies pile up. A long-nailed hand rakes through the swaying grass. Everyone whispers about a vengeful spirit settling an old debt in family blood. Kumar, falling for local girl Radha, keeps pulling the thread until the haunting turns out to have a pulse and a motive.
