The format shift is the real kill. As long as the documentary frame holds, Leslie is a likable goofball performing competence; the moment the camera crew stops filming and the movie snaps into straight third-person slasher coverage, the joke curdles into actual murder. The structure argues that the genre's irony is the only thing keeping its violence digestible, and the second you watch it 'for real' it stops being fun.

Doc Halloran's Reno reveal lets you read the whole thing as the delusion of one mentally ill man, Leslie Mancuso, who has rewritten his pathology into a heroic mythology so he can star in it. Every rule he 'teaches' the crew is less slasher scholarship than a sick man narrating his own breakdown as a career.

The documentarians are the film's actual subject. Their slow drift from neutral observers to complicit enablers, filming setup after setup without stopping him, mirrors the horror audience's own bargain: we keep watching the killer work because the performance is entertaining, right up until the body count makes the cost undeniable.

A camera crew embeds with Leslie Vernon, a chipper aspiring slasher who treats mass murder like a craft to be studied and rehearsed. He name-drops Myers and Voorhees as working professionals, scouts his kill site, plants cardio for the chase, and lectures the documentarians on misdirection and "the survivor girl." Then the crew has to decide whether to keep filming or intervene, and the movie drops the interview conceit entirely, hardening from playful exposé into a real third-act stalk-and-slash where Leslie finally puts the mask on for keeps.
