PLOT
- The giallo at the center of the film, 'The Equestrian Vortex,' is never seen on screen—the audience only ever glimpses its animated opening titles, designed by Julian House of the studio Intro to mimic period title sequences for films like The Dunwich Horror and Blacula. Everything else exists purely as sound and Toby Jones's reaction.
- The on-screen Foley is the real thing: the crew destroyed actual vegetables to fake the torture audio, smashing and stabbing watermelons, cabbages and marrows for bodies and blows, with Gilderoy twisting radishes by the microphone. The fruit-as-flesh gag is the film's entire engine—gore you only ever hear.
- Despite its Italian setting, the film was shot entirely in East London at Three Mills Studios (Three Mills Island), never leaving the claustrophobic mixing rooms and dubbing booths that make up nearly the whole movie.
- The score is the final work of the band Broadcast. Singer Trish Keenan had already begun the soundtrack when she died of pneumonia in January 2011; her partner James Cargill finished it, and Warp released the album in January 2013, after the film.
- At the 2012 British Independent Film Awards the film took four prizes from six nominations—Best Director (Peter Strickland), Best Actor (Toby Jones), Best Achievement in Production and Best Technical Achievement for its sound—yet lost Best Film to Rufus Norris's drama Broken.
- Critics backed the haul: the film holds an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 80, rare consensus for a movie with no monster, no body count you can see, and almost no plot outside a sound desk.
