PLOT
- Cosmatos self-financed the roughly $1.1 million budget with residuals from Tombstone, the 1993 Western his father George P. Cosmatos directed — making his debut feature on his dad's money rather than spending years hunting for financing after George died in 2005.
- The whole film grew from a childhood ritual: barred from renting horror at a video store called Video Attic, Cosmatos stared at the lurid VHS box art and imagined the movies inside. He set out to make 'an imagining of an old film that doesn't exist' — and set it in 1983 because that was the first year he went to the Video Attic.
- Norm Li shot it on 2-perf 35mm using Fuji Eterna 400T stock — the 2-perf format saved roughly 50% on film and processing by capturing the 2.40 widescreen frame natively. He leaned on slow gliding dolly moves and the geodesic-dome interiors of Vancouver's Bloedel Conservatory to make the institute feel cavernous.
- The score is by Sinoia Caves, the analog-synth project of Black Mountain's Jeremy Schmidt, channeling Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos and John Carpenter. Death Waltz and Jagjaguwar didn't put the soundtrack out until 2014, four years after the film premiered.
- The 1966 black-and-white flashback was modeled on E. Elias Merhige's Begotten — Cosmatos wanted that high-contrast monochrome to read like 'a fading and decayed artifact.' The same sequence's acid-trip visions drew on the 'Battle of the Gods' bit from Godard's Contempt.
- It premiered at the 2010 Whistler Film Festival and split rooms hard — walkouts were common, including at its 2011 Tribeca screening, even as others called it an instant cult classic. It was Cosmatos's debut feature, eight years before Mandy.
