Bhoot Bungla

• Mehmood's directorial debut. The comedian directed and starred as youth-club president Mohan, while his brother Usman Ali produced the film under the family banner Mumtaz Films, named for their father.
• The score is R.D. Burman's, and 'Bhoot Bungla' became the first R.D. Burman LP ever pressed (a 1965 release of only a few hundred copies, now a collector's rarity). Hasrat Jaipuri wrote the lyrics; the soundtrack's singers include Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, and Mehmood himself.
• R.D. Burman doesn't just score it, he appears on screen in a cameo as a stocky youth-club member, sharing a comic haunted-house scene with Mehmood. It's one of only two films Burman ever acted in, the other being 1969's 'Pyar Ka Mausam.'
• The standout number 'Aao Twist Karein,' sung by Manna Dey and picturized on Mehmood, is a full 1960s rock-and-roll twist sequence adapted from Chubby Checker's 'Let's Twist Again,' and the film leans hard into that Western pop flavor with a dance staged in the spirit of 'West Side Story.'
• The film knowingly parodies the haunted-house ghost song 'Aayega Aanewala' from 'Mahal' (1949), spoofing the very singing-spectre template that defined the previous generation of Hindi supernatural cinema.
• Frequently cited as India's first full-fledged Hindi horror-comedy, it predates the Stree / Bhediya / Bhool Bhulaiyaa wave by decades and laid down the haunted-house-meets-slapstick blueprint those later films cashed in on.

The bungalow itself is the real antagonist, not any ghost. Every death in the family ties back to the property and a murder fifty years prior, so the 'curse' reads less as the supernatural and more as inherited guilt that the house refuses to let the bloodline outrun. The investigation is really an excavation of family history.

The twist numbers and West Side Story dance aren't filler, they're the thesis. By dropping Western rock-and-roll into a creaking ancestral horror set, the film stages a generational collision: the modern youth club literally dances inside the tomb of the old order, and their irreverence, not exorcism, is what breaks the spell.

Casting the haunting as something to be debunked by a curious gang reframes the ghost story as a mystery about people, not phantoms. The film keeps winking at older supernatural cinema (the Mahal parody) to signal that the 'singing ghost' is a performance, hinting from early on that a human hand is staging the hauntings for gain.

A bloodline keeps dying inside one ancestral bungalow, and nobody can say whether it's bad luck or a curse with a fifty-year-old murder buried under it. Rekha, the last surviving heir, flees to the city and falls in with a rowdy youth club, but the threats follow her. So the gang piles into the haunted property to drag the truth out of the dark, dodging cobwebbed corridors, sliding panels, and a phantom that sings. Mehmood plays the wisecracking club leader who treats a death-house like a dance floor, swerving from genuine dread to full slapstick whenever the lights flicker.
