Black Christmas

• Shot in Toronto over roughly six weeks in early 1974 on a budget of about $686,000, with several scenes filmed around the University of Toronto (the college exteriors at Victoria College).
• Composer Carl Zittrer built the score by tying forks, combs, and knives to the strings of a piano, then warping it further by pressing on the tape reels to make them turn slower and bend the notes into something sick. The score masters were thought lost for about 40 years before Waxwork Records gave it an official release.
• Italian-Canadian actor Nick Mancuso was a primary voice of the killer 'Billy' (uncredited), reportedly performing some calls standing on his head to compress his thorax for a more strangled sound; director Bob Clark and other uncredited performers also contributed, and Carl Zittrer mixed the call audio.
• Warner Bros. released it in US theaters as 'Silent Night, Evil Night,' fearing 'Black Christmas' would be mistaken for a blaxploitation picture; it was later reissued under the original title, and a television airing went out as 'Stranger in the House.'
• Around 1977 John Carpenter and Bob Clark discussed working together, and Clark said if he ever made a Black Christmas sequel it would be about a killer escaping an asylum on Halloween, called 'Halloween' — though Carpenter has since disputed that the conversation ever happened and has been openly critical of the film.
• The 'the calls are coming from inside the house' climax draws on the babysitter-and-the-man-upstairs urban legend, often tied to the 1950 murder of 13-year-old babysitter Janett Christman; in the film the killer Billy is never explained, named, or shown.

Billy is deliberately left as a void, not a man — no backstory, no face, no motive, just an attic and a voice that fractures into multiple personalities. The film argues that explaining a killer is what makes him safe, so it refuses. The phone fragments (the screaming woman, the baby, 'Agnes') are pieces of a history the movie withholds on purpose, leaving the horror as pure unknowable presence.

The phone calls and Jess's pregnancy plotline rhyme on purpose: every thread is about a woman trying to be heard and a man talking over her. Billy's calls, Peter's escalating control over Jess's body, and the cops who don't take the missing girls seriously are the same threat wearing three faces — the call is always coming from inside the patriarchy, not just the house.

The bleak final shot — Jess sedated, alone, the killer still upstairs, the phone ringing again — reads as the movie quietly telling you the 'final girl' didn't win. She survived the wrong man (Peter) and was left with the right one (Billy), and the ringing line says the cycle just resets for the next house.

A sorority house empties out for the holidays, but somebody never leaves. Before the killing starts, the phone does the work — a voice that splits into pig-grunts, baby-talk, and a woman's scream, all from a man the girls only ever call Billy. Jess wants an abortion, her boyfriend Peter is unraveling, the house mother stashes her liquor in books and the bathroom toilet tank, and the cops are slow. One by one the sisters disappear into an attic nobody checks. By the last shot the line is still open and nobody is coming.
