PLOT
- This was Mario Bava's official feature directing debut at 46, after twenty years as a cinematographer and effects man. He's credited as cinematographer too and personally designed the lighting, optical tricks and that restless dolly work - though camera operator Ubaldo Terzano did much of the hands-on shooting, the look on screen is Bava's.
- The original Italian title was La Maschera del Demonio (The Mask of Satan), loosely adapted from Nikolai Gogol's 1835 short story 'Viy.' Bava prepared the English-language version as 'The Mask of Satan,' but AIP retitled it Black Sunday for the American market.
- AIP didn't just import it - they cut it down (from about 87 minutes to 83), re-dubbed it with American voice actors, and tossed Roberto Nicolosi's original score for a new one by Les Baxter. The retooled version became AIP's highest-grossing release in the company's first five years.
- The British Board of Film Censors rejected it when Anglo-Amalgamated submitted it in February 1961, the Board's own paperwork citing 'grounds of disgust.' It didn't reach UK screens until 1968 - heavily cut and renamed Revenge of the Vampire - and the uncut film wasn't legally available in Britain until 1992.
- Barbara Steele plays both the vengeful witch Asa and her innocent look-alike descendant Katia. The dual role and her unnerving face made her the reigning horror queen of the 1960s practically overnight.
- Tim Burton called it a core inspiration for Sleepy Hollow (1999) - he's said 'one of the movies that remain with me probably stronger than anything is Black Sunday,' and the shot of Ichabod's mother punctured inside the iron maiden is a direct homage to Asa's spiked mask.
