PLOT
- Built on a $45 million budget, it grossed $131.2 million worldwide and became the first commercially successful film based on a Marvel character — producer Avi Arad later credited Blade's box office with giving studios the nerve to greenlight X-Men (2000), saying nobody would have made a film that size 'without looking at Blade.'
- Blade is a deep cut even by comic standards: Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan created him as a supporting player in The Tomb of Dracula #10 (cover-dated July 1973), not as a headliner. David S. Goyer wrote the screenplay; Stephen Norrington directed.
- The opening blood rave was shot in a real factory rigged like a sprinkler system to dump a corn-syrup blood mix on the dancers, who stayed in their soaked outfits between takes — some extras were genuinely freaked out. A studio exec deemed it 'too much' and nearly cut it; a beat where a human victim fumbled with a 1998 flip phone to dial 911 was trimmed.
- Production was based in a former Redken Shampoo factory in Canoga Park, where the sets were built and most filming happened, with some sequences shot out in Death Valley.
- The first cut ran 140 minutes and tested badly: Frost's transformation into the blood god La Magra was a swirling CGI blood blob that audiences rejected. Roughly 20 minutes were cut and reshoots brought Wesley Snipes and Stephen Dorff back to stage the climactic swordfight (keeping Frost humanoid) instead — the discarded original ending later surfaced as a DVD extra.
- Snipes brought real fight credentials to the role: a 5th-dan black belt in Shotokan Karate, he also trained in Capoeira under Mestre Jelon Vieira along with other disciplines, which fed the film's blend of swordplay and kicks.
