• Director Ed Hunt built the whole premise off an astrology article about the 20-year curse on U.S. presidents who died in office. His twist: a solar eclipse blots out Saturn, the planet the movie treats as the seat of how a person treats other people, so the three kids are born missing a conscience.
• It carried the working title 'Creeps' during production, which kicked off in May 1980, and was shot under the title 'Happy Birthday.'
• The kids don't kill at random — they bludgeon their schoolteacher Mrs. Davis for refusing them a day off, and Debbie murders her own teenage sister Beverly, putting an arrow straight through the closet peephole she'd been charging quarters to spy through.

The eclipse is a fig leaf — the movie is really about how completely adults refuse to see children as capable of evil. Every kill works because grown-ups read youth as innocence by default; the kids weaponize the assumption, and the only people who catch on are other kids and a teenager. The astrology is just the excuse that lets the audience off the hook for the same blind spot.

Curtis is the clear ringleader and the only one who seems to enjoy it, suggesting the eclipse didn't create three identical monsters so much as it removed the brakes on three distinct kids — one calculating, one a follower, one a budding sadist. The 'no Saturn, no emotion' setup is less a switch than a permission slip, which is why their violence escalates as their birthday and their bond intensify.

Beverly's peephole subplot isn't filler — it rhymes the kids' voyeuristic cruelty with the film's own camera. The quarters-for-a-look gag frames watching as the real transaction, putting the audience in the same closet, paying to see what we shouldn't. The murders and the peephole are the same impulse pointed two directions.
