Body Melt

• Made on roughly AU$1.65 million from the Australian Film Commission and Film Victoria, shot on Super 16 with a 35mm blow-up — and billed as the first Australian feature built specifically around special makeup-FX set-pieces.
• Effects supervisor Bob McCarron, one of the country's top prosthetics men, executed roughly 50 slime-soaked gags and the crew went through three 40-gallon drums of fake phlegm; his builds included giant tongues, neck tentacles that crawl up a nostril, and a placenta that leaps onto a character's face.
• Director Philip Brophy and co-writer/producer Rod Bishop were both ex-members of the art-punk outfit Tsk Tsk Tsk; Brophy also composed the film's electronic score, and the lean budget still found room to license Deep Purple's 'Highway Star.'
• The ensemble is stacked with Australian soap and TV faces — Ian Smith (Harold Bishop on Neighbours, here playing Dr. Carrera), Gerard Kennedy, a screen-debuting Lisa McCune, and William McInnes — cast by Brophy specifically to exploit their familiar small-screen iconography.
• Brophy pitched the concept as 'the suburbs on weird drugs and the apocalypse next door,' drawing on aerobics classes, new housing estates, health farms and newlyweds to skewer complacent clean-living lifestyle culture.
• Despite its splatter content it landed three 1994 AFI Award nominations — Best Sound, Best Editing (Bill Murphy), and Best Costume Design (Anna Borghesi).

The toxic-dump foundation under Vimuville is the whole thesis: the wellness industry sells purification while sitting on poison. Every melting body is the suburb's repressed rot finally surfacing — the spa promised a 'new you' and delivered the literal dissolution of the old one.

Pud's mutant outback clan isn't a detour, it's the mirror. The cannibal family experimented on themselves and degenerated; the Pebbles Court couples are doing the same thing one mailed sample at a time. Brophy is collapsing the gap between the 'civilized' estate and Texas Chainsaw country — same self-consumption, nicer landscaping.

Casting beloved soap-opera actors as the dissolving victims turns the gore into media satire. The familiar TV-perfect family was always a manufactured product; watching those exact faces liquefy reads as the screen-fed fantasy of suburban contentment rupturing on camera.

Pebbles Court is a dead-end cul-de-sac on an outer-Melbourne housing estate, lined with picture-perfect suburban couples — woolen jumpers, baby-name books, four-wheel drives — and every one of them is an unwitting test subject. The nearby Vimuville health spa, built atop a condemned toxic dump, has been sending free samples of its E-59 "vitamin" supplement to the whole street. The pills don't perfect the body; they dissolve it. As detective Sam Phillips works the rising body count, residents sprout tongues, birth predatory placentas, and liquefy from the inside while the contaminated product heads toward retail.
