Bulbbul

• Directorial debut for Anvita Dutt, a lyricist and dialogue writer before this. Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Ssharma produced it under Clean Slate Filmz, and Netflix dropped it June 24, 2020.
• The look was reverse-engineered from paintings, not photographs. Dutt and cinematographer Siddharth Diwan built the frames off Raja Ravi Varma's classical Indian portraiture and Caravaggio's lighting, with Diwan also pulling from Man Ray and colonial-era photographer Raja Deen Dayal.
• The two timelines are color-coded on purpose. The past plays in cooler tones for childhood and innocence; the present drowns in red, marking Bulbbul's shift from victim to something closer to a goddess.
• The blood-red forest was a mango grove on the outskirts of Mumbai. The crew smoked up the trees and lit them red to get the silhouetted, surreal feel rather than relying on a real location.
• Exteriors of the haveli and Binodini's room were shot at Rajbari Bawali, a restored mansion roughly 2.5 hours' drive from Kolkata, with the rest built out through set extensions and VFX shot in Mumbai.
• It cleaned up at the first-ever Filmfare OTT Awards on December 19, 2020. Tripti Dimri won Best Actor in a Web Original Film (Female), Rahul Bose won Best Supporting Actor (Male), and the film was nominated for Best Film.

The chudail's backward feet aren't a curse, they're the point. Folklore says the witch's feet turn backward; here a man literally breaks Bulbbul's feet and she's forced into clunky shoes to hide them. As the chudail she flies, feet finally free, and the thing that terrifies the men is the visible evidence of what they did to her.

Bulbbul as Kali is the film's real twist. The red palette, the blood, the killing of the town's abusers all frame her not as a ghost but as the avenging goddess made flesh. Read that way, the men who go out 'hunting the witch' are hunting the same divine feminine they pray to, just one that finally answers structural violence in kind.

The tragedy is that she still burns. The finale denies the clean fairy-tale win: Bulbbul liberates herself and other women by killing the predators, but the forest takes her too. The film quietly questions whether rage, however earned, is actually a way out under a system built to consume women either way.

A girl is married off at five to a lord decades her senior in 1880s Bengal, then raised inside a haveli where the only kindness comes from her husband's younger brother. He's shipped to London to study law; she's left to the family's appetites. When he returns twenty years later, the village is bleeding men, and a chudail with backward feet is haunting the woods. Anvita Dutt buries a child-bride's destruction under fairy-tale colors and lets the monster turn out to be the only honest thing in the house.
