Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things

• Shot in roughly 14 days for about $50,000 in and around Miami, Florida, with principal photography underway in September 1971 — a price tag that explains the single-night, single-location structure.
• Alan Ormsby pulled triple duty: he co-wrote the script with Bob Clark, played lead antagonist Alan, AND designed the corpse and ghoul makeup himself rather than hiring an effects house.
• Clark took the directing credit under his birth name, Benjamin Clark, and built the film off the template George Romero set with Night of the Living Dead (1968) — one of the early flesh-eating-ghoul pictures to chase Romero's lead.
• Distributors kept rebranding it to ride trends: it circulated as Revenge of the Living Dead, Things from the Dead, and Zreaks. It opened May 12, 1972, double-billed with The Dunwich Horror in Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.
• The tombstones in the cemetery set were carved from styrofoam and lettered with the real names of crew members — Clark staffed the shoot with college friends — a low-budget in-joke hiding in plain sight across the graveyard.
• The Clark/Ormsby team was a horror incubator: Ormsby and co-star Jeff Gillen went on to co-direct Deranged (1974), the Ed Gein film that gave a young Tom Savini his first professional makeup-effects work. Anya Ormsby, in the cast here, was Alan Ormsby's wife at the time.

The film is less a zombie picture than a takedown of theater-kid narcissism. Alan treats the dead the way he treats his actors — as props for his own performance — so when Orville's crowd rises, it reads as the cast he's bullied finally refusing to take direction. The horror is just rehearsal turning real.

Read the raising ritual as a confession that the magic never mattered. Alan's incantation fails on cue; the dead only stir later, off his timing. The suggestion is that contempt for the dead, not the spell, is what wakes them — desecration as the actual trigger, ceremony as theater.

The cottage standoff plays the troupe's bickering as the true rot. Long before any corpse moves, these people are already dead weight to each other — vain, cruel, hollow. The ghouls aren't an invasion so much as a mirror, dragging the living down to a level they were halfway to already.

Alan, an insufferable theater director with a god complex, ferries his put-upon troupe by boat to a fog-wrapped island that doubles as a potter's field for executed criminals. He herds them into a caretaker's cottage for the night, then digs up a corpse he nicknames Orville, dons a robe, and stages a grandiose grimoire-fueled raising ceremony, mocking the dead all night. The ritual seems to flop, so the actors fall back to the cottage to keep needling each other. Then the graves answer back. Clark turns petty stage-world vanity into a slow, sour comedy that curdles into a full ghoul siege before dawn.
