City of the Living Dead

• The Italian title, Paura nella città dei morti viventi, translates to 'Fear in the City of the Living Dead' — and the cursed town of Dunwich is named straight out of H.P. Lovecraft, who invented the place in his 1929 story 'The Dunwich Horror.' Screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti's original draft set it in Salem instead.
• It's the opening chapter of Fulci's unofficial 'Gates of Hell' trilogy, followed by The Beyond (1981) and The House by the Cemetery (1981), all three starring Catriona MacColl.
• The maggot-storm sequence used two wind machines and about 10 kg (roughly 22 pounds) of real maggots blasted at the cast — actors had clumps spirit-gummed to their faces before the rest were blown in.
• Daniela Doria's notorious organ-vomiting scene was done by having her spit up real baby veal intestines on camera, then swapping her head for a dummy replica to push the regurgitation further than a live actor could stomach.
• The film was shot largely on US locations — Savannah, Georgia and New York City — with all the interiors completed back in Rome. The six-week Savannah shoot partly dodged union conflicts over the imported cast and crew.
• UK censors made the BBFC cut the infamous power-drill head killing for the 1982 release (it finally passed uncut in 2001), and in Germany VHS copies were seized after a 1986 Munich court hearing, with the restriction standing for years afterward.

The infamous freeze-frame ending — the boy John-John running at Mary as her scream shatters the frame to black — reads less like a botched edit and more like the only honest finish for a film where cause and effect have collapsed. The dead are already through the gate; closing it changed nothing. Mary's terror at a living child is the realization that 'safe' no longer exists in Dunwich.

Fulci called the drill killing a comment on Fascism, and the town backs it up: Dunwich is a closed community where authority (the priest) opens the door to horror and the locals can only react, never stop it. The gore isn't decoration — it's bodies betraying their owners, an order that eats its own.

The whole film can be read as Mary never actually escaping her coffin. She 'dies' in the séance, claws out of a grave, and everything after plays by dream-logic — geography that doesn't connect, deaths with no rules, an ending that just stops. Dunwich isn't a place she travels to; it's the inside of the box she was buried in.

A priest hangs himself in the cemetery of Dunwich and tears a hole in the wall between the living and the dead. In New York, psychic Mary Woodhouse drops dead mid-séance from the vision, then wakes inside her own coffin. She and a skeptical reporter race to the New England town before All Saints' Day, when the suicide will let the dead pour through for good. What they find is a place where physics has quit: townsfolk weep blood and disgorge their own organs, maggots fall like rain, and the dead simply appear behind you, hands already reaching.
