Cold Prey

• The production hauled roughly 20 tons of equipment to the Jotunheimen peak by helicopter, shooting in conditions that dropped below -25 degrees Celsius.
• The lodge isn't a set - exteriors and key scenes used the real, still-operational Leirvassbu mountain lodge in Leirdalen, deep in Norway's Jotunheimen range (renamed 'Stehøe' in the film).
• It was Roar Uthaug's feature directorial debut; he later jumped to Hollywood for the Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider (2018) and the Netflix kaiju film Troll (2022).
• Ingrid Bolsø Berdal won the Amanda Award - Norway's national film prize - for Best Actress for playing Jannicke, taken at the 2007 ceremony in Haugesund.
• It pulled over 257,000 admissions and roughly $3.7 million, landing as Norway's 9th highest-grossing film of 2006 and spawning two follow-ups (a 2008 sequel and a 2010 prequel).
• The killer's origin is seeded in the cold open: a 1970s boy with a birthmark across his eye is chased down, falls into a ditch, and is buried alive in the snow - the trauma that produces the Mountain Man.

The hotel is the real monster. It dies the year the boy vanishes and stays dead until five outsiders force it back open - the Mountain Man reads less like a slasher and more like the building's immune response to trespass.

Jannicke survives because she's the only one who treats the mountain as hostile from frame one. The others came to play in it; she came prepared to fight it, which is why the pickaxe killer meets his match in the snow he owns.

The buried-alive prologue reframes every kill as repetition compulsion - a child smothered under snow grows up to smother others in the same white silence, the lodge feeding him fresh victims to re-stage the night he was put in the ground.

Five friends ride off-piste into Jotunheimen looking for fresh powder and find a graveyard with a roof. When a busted leg strands them, they hole up in a mountain lodge that's been dark for decades - shuttered after the owners' son was lost in the snow as a boy and never came home. Roar Uthaug runs the slasher playbook with surgical cold: the group thins, the lodge tightens, and a pickaxe-swinging figure in animal hides works the halls. Jannicke is the one who stops running and starts hunting back.
