Coming Home in the Dark

• James Ashcroft's feature debut was made for roughly NZ$970,000, adapted from a 1995 Owen Marshall short story he co-wrote with playwright Eli Kent.
• Owen Marshall wrote the original story after reading repeated newspaper accounts of random, senseless violence, chasing a deliberate contrast between gorgeous landscape and the awful thing that develops within it.
• Marshall's source story was set in the Hooker Valley beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook; Ashcroft moved the whole thing to the windswept Greater Wellington coast and shot it there.
• It premiered in the Midnight section at Sundance 2021 on January 31, then hit New Zealand theaters that August and US select theaters and VOD on October 1, 2021.
• Daniel Gillies, known to most as the suave Elijah Mikaelson on The Originals, was cast hard against type as the calm, talkative killer Mandrake.
• The film holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score off 63 reviews; it swept the Loudoun Arts Film Festival with Best Narrative, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Matthias Luafutu, and also took Best Director at both Spain's Terror Molins and Tenerife's Isla Calavera festivals.

The whole film is a trial with no judge. Mandrake isn't robbing the family, he's prosecuting Hoaggie for the years he spent as an assistant teacher at a boys' home where he saw the abuse and reported nothing. Every mile in the car is cross-examination, and the verdict was decided before the picnic ever started.

The state-care backstory isn't just plot, it's New Zealand confronting its own record. The notorious institution where Mandrake and Tubs were broken mirrors real abuse in state and faith-based care that the country was only beginning to reckon with publicly, which is why the bystander, not just the abuser, gets put on the stand.

Tubs is what Mandrake would have been without the rage, the proof of the theory rather than its author. He follows orders because the home taught him to follow orders, and his near-silence makes the argument the film keeps pressing: the damage done to a child doesn't end when the child grows up, it just changes hands.

A schoolteacher, his wife, and their two boys stop to picnic on a stretch of empty New Zealand coast. Two drifters wander in.
