Compliance

• The film is a near-faithful reconstruction of a real 2004 hoax at a McDonald's in Mount Washington, Kentucky, where 18-year-old Louise Ogborn was strip-searched and abused for hours after a caller posed as a police officer. Investigators tied the same scam to more than 70 such calls reported across some 30 U.S. states over roughly a decade.
• The suspected caller, a Florida corrections officer named David Stewart, was tried and acquitted of all counts in October 2006 — there was no recording of his voice and no witness who could place him at the payphone, so jurors couldn't convict after just over an hour and a half of deliberation. The real man at the center of the worst single-location abuse case walked.
• Director Craig Zobel built the story off Stanley Milgram's early-1960s Yale obedience experiments, which Milgram designed partly to understand how a culture could enable the Holocaust. Compliance is essentially Milgram's electric-shock test relocated to a chicken restaurant.
• Zobel shot the storefront and dining-area scenes inside a real Northern chicken restaurant with its branding covered over, keeping the actual chain's name secret per an agreement with the company — but the cramped back-office and stockroom where most of the abuse plays out was a constructed set, not the real building.
• Ann Dowd was paid roughly $100 a day across about 16 shooting days. When distributor Magnolia Pictures declined to send awards screeners, Dowd put about $6,000 on a credit card and borrowed another $7,000 from friends — roughly $13,000 — to press and mail DVDs to voters herself. She went on to win the National Board of Review's Best Supporting Actress award for 2012.
• The Sundance 2012 premiere turned hostile — walkouts during the screening and a shouting match at the Q&A, with one audience member shouting 'This is not the year to make violence against women entertaining.' Walkouts followed at opening-weekend showings in Los Angeles and New York.

The real predator was never the caller — it was the uniform of authority itself. Zobel deliberately keeps 'Officer Daniels' a calm, reasonable voice rather than a sneering villain, and the film's structure makes obedience the antagonist. The cutaways to the caller at home, eating and relaxing while orchestrating abuse, frame him as banal and ordinary, the Milgram point made flesh: cruelty doesn't require a monster, only someone willing to defer.

The manager Sandra is positioned as a second victim, not a co-villain. Her age, insecurity, and hunger to be taken seriously by a 'real cop' are seeded in early small-talk scenes about a spoiled-food incident she's anxious to cover. Read that way, the caller's genius is target selection — he hunts for the person most desperate for approval from authority, and the strip search is less about Becky's guilt than about Sandra proving she's competent and obedient.

The film argues the camera and the audience are implicated too. By making viewers watch and refusing to look away, Compliance turns the act of spectating into its own form of compliance — we keep watching the same way the characters keep obeying, and the Sundance walkouts were arguably the only people in the room who actually said no.

A slow Friday at a fictional fast-food joint called ChickWich turns into a nightmare run by a voice on the phone. A man claiming to be a cop tells the harried manager, Sandra, that her teenage counter girl, Becky, pocketed cash from a customer. No badge, no warrant, just authority asserted down a landline — and that's enough. Sandra strip-searches the girl, then hands the phone to others, each instruction more degrading than the last. Nobody hangs up. The horror isn't a monster. It's how readily ordinary people obey a stranger who simply sounds in charge.
