Cube

• Made for roughly $350,000 CAD through the Canadian Film Centre's First Feature Project, and shot in only about 21 days.
• Only one 14x14x14-foot cube room was ever physically built. Every differently colored chamber is the same set, recolored by swapping translucent gel panels at the camera and walls.
• Because changing the gels was slow, the film was shot color-by-color instead of in story order. The red gels were installed first, so all the red-room scenes were filmed before any other color.
• Natali planned six room colors to echo the recurring theme of six, but the budget couldn't cover a sixth gel set, leaving five colors plus pure white.
• Every character is named after a real prison: Quentin (San Quentin), Holloway (HMP Holloway in England), Rennes (a prison in France), Kazan (a prison in Russia), and Leaven and Worth (both from Leavenworth), with each personality engineered to mirror that prison's reputation.
• Vincenzo Natali shot a proof-of-concept short called 'Elevated,' set entirely in an elevator, to show investors the trapped-room style and get the feature financed. Cube later won Best Canadian First Feature at TIFF and became a sizable hit in France and Japan.

The prison-name design is the answer the movie withholds: these aren't random abductees but inmates of a carceral system, each a walking profile of the institution they're named for. Read that way, the Cube isn't a mystery box, it's a prison with no warden, and the lack of a builder or motive is the point. Worth's flat admission that nobody is in charge of the thing he helped build is the closest the film gets to confession.

Kazan walking alone into the white light at the end isn't a rescue, it's the design working as intended. The 'broken' man everyone nearly abandoned is the only one whose mind survives intact, because he never wastes energy demanding meaning from the structure. The survivor is the one who stops trying to understand it and simply solves the next room.

Quentin's collapse maps the real trap. The room logic kills a few; the social logic kills the rest. He arrives as the natural leader and decays into the deadliest thing inside the Cube once authority has no system to enforce it, suggesting the chambers were never the experiment, the group was.

Six strangers snap awake inside a featureless cubic room with a hatch in every wall. No memory of how they got there, no shared reason to be there. Beyond each door waits another identical chamber, some rigged to dice, burn, or dissolve whoever steps wrong. A cop, a math student, a doctor, an escape artist, a cynic, and a man written off as broken start mapping the trap by its numbers. Cooperation curdles into paranoia, the architecture never explains itself, and the real machine turns out to be the one running inside the people.
