Dark Age

• Adapted from the novel Numunwari by Grahame Webb, a genuine saltwater-crocodile biologist who founded Darwin's Crocodylus Park (opened 1994) and has worked in croc research and conservation since the 1960s, much of it alongside Arnhem Land Aboriginal communities — the conservation-vs-cull argument in the film is his actual life's work, not invented drama. Screenplay by Sonia Borg.
• Budget ran A$4.8 million, shot starting April 22, 1986 — five weeks around Cairns and one in Alice Springs.
• The croc's protector, elder Oondabund, is played by Burnum Burnum, a real Aboriginal activist who two years later, on January 26, 1988 (the 200th anniversary of the First Fleet), planted the Aboriginal flag at the White Cliffs of Dover and 'claimed' England for his people. David Gulpilil plays his son Adjaral.
• Cinematographer Andrew Lesnie shot it more than a decade before he won the Best Cinematography Oscar for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; he also lensed Babe in between.
• The film never got a theatrical release in its own country — the Australian distributor went broke during post-production, leaving it stranded on overseas tape editions for some 24 years before any local home-video release.
• Quentin Tarantino, a self-professed fan, lent his personal 35mm print for an August 4, 2009 screening at Sydney's Hayden Orpheum. Umbrella Entertainment finally put it on Australian DVD on October 5, 2011, with a Blu-ray following in 2017.

The croc isn't the monster — the system is. Every human threat in the film (poachers blasting away for sport, officials who only want a carcass to wave at the press) is more dangerous than Numunwari, who's just being a crocodile. The horror reframes itself: the creature-feature kill count is a smokescreen for a land-rights story where the 'pest' has more claim to the country than the people hunting it.

Numunwari functions as the embodiment of the land's memory rather than a single animal. The elders treat it as sacred and irreplaceable, and Harris's arc — from exterminator to protector — tracks a settler character slowly accepting that some things on this continent were never his to manage. The mission to return the croc alive plays as repatriation, not pest control.

The film's own burial mirrors its plot. A movie about an Australian icon that the country's institutions failed to protect, then left to rot offshore until an outsider hauled it back home — the distribution history reads like the on-screen argument about who values what, playing out for real on the asset itself.

Northern Territory ranger Steve Harris hunts a 25-foot saltwater croc chewing through the bush, only to learn the thing is Numunwari — a sacred animal the local Aboriginal elders won't let him kill. Caught between trigger-happy poachers, a bureaucracy that wants a trophy, and a community that wants the croc returned alive to its home water, Harris flips the whole creature-feature script: he ends up trying to save the monster. A killer-animal picture that's really about who owns the land and who decides what gets to live on it.
