Dark Night of the Scarecrow

• Writer J.D. Feigelson conceived it as an independent feature, but CBS bought the script for television and shot it nearly as written, with only minor changes to his original teleplay. It first aired October 24, 1981.
• The entire film was shot in 17 days in Piru, California, a frequent stand-in for small-town America. The schedule was supposed to be 18 days but lost one to a fire on location.
• HorrorHound managing editor Aaron Crowell credits it as the first feature-length horror film built around a scarecrow, making Feigelson the progenitor of the killer-scarecrow subgenre everyone copied afterward.
• Network standards barred on-screen gore, so the deaths land through suggestion and sound design. Harliss falls into his own woodchipper, but the camera never shows the body, the kill ends on the machine's squeal as the dropped scythe jams the blades.
• Larry Drake plays Bubba years before his Emmy-winning run as Benny on L.A. Law; Charles Durning anchors the cast as the vicious postmaster Otis Hazelrigg, who leads the lynch mob.
• VCI Entertainment rescued the film from out-of-print VHS obscurity with a digitally restored special-edition DVD in 2010, whose extras included the original CBS network promo that aired right before the 1981 premiere.

The scarecrow may never physically kill anyone. Every death reads as an accident or panic, and the entity only appears to men already drowning in guilt. Read that way, Bubba's ghost is optional and the real engine is conscience hunting its owners down. The film never confirms a supernatural hand, which is exactly why it works on network TV terms.

The closing pumpkin-patch scene reframes Marylee as the quiet center of the haunting. She thanks the scarecrow, accepts a flower, and offers to teach it 'the chasing game.' The friendship that triggered the whole massacre is the one bond that survives death, suggesting the vengeance was always serving her, not just punishing the mob.

Otis dying impaled on the very pitchfork he planted on Bubba's corpse turns the cover-up into the murder weapon. The frame the killers built to make Bubba look dangerous becomes the literal instrument of their ruin, the lie circling back to execute the liar.

Four small-town men gun down Bubba Ritter, a gentle man with a child's mind, after a girl he protects turns up hurt. They stage it as self-defense, jam a pitchfork in his dead hands, and walk free. Then the scarecrow Bubba hid inside starts showing up in their fields. One by one the killers die in ways nobody can pin on a living soul, while postmaster Otis Hazelrigg unravels trying to prove a corpse is stalking him. No gore, no monster reveal worth the name. Just guilt wearing burlap.
