Dark Water

• Adapted from Koji Suzuki's 1996 short story 'Floating Water,' it was Nakata's second pull from the same author who handed him Ringu in 1998 — same well, different ghost.
• Toho released it in Japan on January 19, 2002. It was no blockbuster: roughly $906,000 domestic and about $1.4 million worldwide, a fraction of what Ringu pulled.
• Junichiro Hayashi shot it — the same cinematographer behind Ringu and Pulse — which is why that drowned, blue-gray palette feels like a continuous nightmare across the J-horror wave.
• Critics didn't treat it as disposable scare-fare: it holds an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the BFI later called it an 'eerie and heartbreaking adaptation' rather than just creepy.
• Hollywood remade it fast — Walter Salles directed the 2005 English version with Jennifer Connelly and Tim Roth, hitting theaters July 8, 2005, three years after the original.
• Screenwriters Yoshihiro Nakamura and Kenichi Suzuki built the script around a single sustained motif — a leak from the apartment above — letting decay and dread do the work other horror hands to jump scares.

The water isn't haunted plumbing — it's grief made literal. The ceiling stain that keeps bleeding through no matter how it's patched mirrors Yoshimi's own unprocessed abandonment as a child; the building is just leaking what she can't say out loud.

Mitsuko, the drowned girl, isn't hunting a victim — she's auditioning a mother. Every manifestation escalates only when Yoshimi's grip on Ikuko loosens (the custody battle, the moments she's distracted), and the final bargain works because the ghost wanted what Ikuko already had: someone who'd stay.

The decade-later coda reads less as comfort than as confirmation of the trade's cost. The grown Ikuko sees no one in the hall, only the absence — the film quietly suggests she's spent her whole life half-believing she was the one given up, never sure her mother chose her over the dead girl.

A divorced mother grinding through a custody fight signs for a cheap, crumbling apartment with her young daughter, only to find a brown stain spreading across the ceiling and a leak that won't quit no matter how many supers shrug at it. A child's red bag keeps coming back. Footsteps patter from an empty floor above. What starts as bad plumbing curdles into the story of a little girl nobody came back for, and a mother forced to decide whose child she'll save when the water finally rises.
