Daughters of Darkness

• Shot on a roughly $750,000 budget as a Belgium-France-West Germany co-production. Exteriors were filmed at the Royal Galleries of Ostend and the Grand Hotel des Thermes (which sits atop the arcade) during the dead of off-season specifically to capture the resort's emptied, abandoned feel; interiors were shot at the Hotel Astoria in Brussels.
• Delphine Seyrig was cast off her arthouse cachet from Alain Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad, and director Harry Kümel has said her participation was the sole reason the film's financing came together. To play the countess she leaned on Marlene Dietrich and Josef von Sternberg's languid screen persona.
• Kümel deliberately modeled Seyrig's Báthory on Marlene Dietrich and Andrea Rau's Ilona on silent-era icon Louise Brooks, building the film's look around two specific star archetypes.
• The countess is named for the real Elizabeth Báthory (1560-1614), the Hungarian noblewoman tied to the legend of murdering young women and bathing in their blood to preserve her youth, though that blood-bath detail first surfaced about a century after her death and is now widely doubted.
• John Karlen, who plays the abusive husband Stefan, was already a cult name as Willie Loomis on the gothic soap Dark Shadows; he later won a 1986 Primetime Emmy for Cagney & Lacey.
• The US theatrical release was cut by about 12 minutes for an R rating and circulated on American and Canadian VHS retitled Children of the Night; the full uncut version was later restored, with Blue Underground scanning a 4K UHD release from the long-lost original 35mm camera negative.

The film treats vampirism less as a supernatural curse than as a transfer of power between women. The countess never just feeds on Valerie; she recruits her, and the epilogue showing Valerie luring a fresh young couple reframes the whole movie as an apprenticeship in predation completed, not a monster defeated.

Stefan is arguably the true horror, with the literal vampire functioning as Valerie's escape route from him. His sadism, the secret call to his ominous 'mother,' and his violence make Báthory's offer read as liberation, which is why the bride's defection lands as triumph rather than tragedy.

Setting the seduction in a Leopold II-era grand hotel in Ostend loads the decadence with rot. The aristocratic Báthory preying on guests in a monument built on old colonial wealth frames the countess as the logical endpoint of inherited privilege that survives by consuming the young.
