PLOT
  • Made for roughly £723,000 and shot in about three weeks in May 2003 around real Derbyshire locations: Matlock, the farm at Bonsall, and the climax staged at Riber Castle. The budget was so lean the entire cast and crew rode to set in a single minibus.
  • There was no definitive script. Most scenes and lines existed only as a rough draft, so the bulk of the dialogue was improvised on set. The project carried the working title 'The Skull' before release.
  • Toby Kebbell made his screen debut as Anthony, shooting his entire role in the final week of production after the character was rewritten from an older to a younger brother to fit him.
  • Gary Stretch, who plays gang leader Sonny, was a former professional boxer cast at the eleventh hour, making his own screen debut with no prior film experience.
  • The soundtrack pulls in Aphex Twin, whose 'Nanou 2' from the album Drukqs appears in the film alongside Clayhill's 'Afterlight' and Richard Hawley's 'Steel 2', with the album released through Warp Records.
  • Considine won Best British Actor at the 2005 Empire Awards for the role, and the film drew eight British Independent Film Award nominations, including Best Newcomer for Kebbell and Best Supporting Actor for Stretch.
