TRIVIA
THEORIES
PLOT
  • Spouses Vanessa and Joseph Winter co-wrote, co-directed, produced, and edited the film as their feature debut; Joseph also stars as Shawn Ruddy and composed the score, while Melanie Stone plays both Chrissy and the ghost Mildred Pratt.
  • The first-person livestream conceit was shot for real: Joseph performed nearly the entire movie alone rigged with a GoPro head-mount and an over-the-shoulder camera, reacting in-camera to practical effects triggered around him.
  • Creature work was kept practical to chase an '80s creature-feature' feel inside a found-footage frame, with creatures designed by Troy Larson (who pitched anatomically 'what if it could do this' variants off references like Hieronymus Bosch) and makeup by Mikaela Kester.
  • Vanessa Winter pushed for a real-time, non-editing presentation so the stream reads as one continuous unbroken broadcast rather than a cut-together edit.
  • It was shot in an actual abandoned house with heavy local lore; the Winters have said roughly half the crew was convinced the place was haunted, with two rooms nobody wanted to be alone in.
  • The same year, the Winters directed the 'To Hell and Back' segment of V/H/S/99, reuniting Joseph with co-star Melanie Stone; both Deadstream and V/H/S/99 landed on Shudder within the same October 2022 window. Deadstream premiered at SXSW on March 11, 2022, hit Shudder October 6, and holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score.
