Death Walks on High Heels

• Co-star Frank Wolff, who plays Dr. Robert Matthews, died by suicide in his Rome hotel on December 12, 1971 — roughly three weeks after the film opened in Italy on November 19, 1971. He was 43. It was one of his final released roles.

The mid-film pivot to flashbacks and competing points of view isn't sloppy structure — it's the script admitting the visual evidence you trusted was staged for you, the same way it was staged for Nicole.

Read it as a movie about performance and disguise top to bottom. Nicole literally paints on another identity to work the stage; the killer wears another man's eyes; alibis are costumes. Every major figure is mid-act, which is why the second-half whodunit lands — in a world where everyone is performing someone else, the only honest character is the corpse.

The English-countryside escape is a trap dressed as safety. Nicole flees Paris with an older married doctor expecting the city danger to stay behind, but the film argues there's no neutral ground — the threat just changes accents. The tonal break between the lurid Paris first act and the colder investigative second act maps that false sense of refuge collapsing.

Paris stripper Nicole Rochard works a stage act under stage lights and a black razor in the dark. When her diamond-thief father turns up murdered, a blue-eyed stalker decides she's holding the loot, and the threats start cutting close. She runs to the English coast with an older married doctor, hoping distance buys safety. It doesn't. Halfway through, Ercoli pulls the rug — the case fractures into flashbacks, shifting suspects, and a second-half whodunit where every alibi rots and the killer's eyes were never the ones you watched.
