PLOT
  • Co-star Frank Wolff, who plays Dr. Robert Matthews, died by suicide in his Rome hotel on December 12, 1971 — roughly three weeks after the film opened in Italy on November 19, 1971. He was 43. It was one of his final released roles.
  • Leading lady Nieves Navarro performed under the Americanized stage name 'Susan Scott,' which she'd adopted around 1969. She married director Luciano Ercoli in 1972 — the year after this film — and headlined his productions into the early 1980s.
  • It's an Italy-Spain co-production (Cinecompany and Atlántida Films) and exists in two cuts: 105 minutes for the Italian release and 98 minutes for the Spanish one, which opened April 2, 1972.
  • The script is by Ernesto Gastaldi, the giallo trade's most prolific writer, who leans the mystery on a planted clue — a pair of blue contact lenses Nicole finds in her boyfriend Michel's bathroom cabinet — to frame the wrong man for the masked killer's piercing blue stare.
  • The 'Death Walks' duology with Death Walks at Midnight (1972) is a branding pairing, not a sequel — same director, same star (Navarro), overlapping crew, but two unrelated stories. The matching titles were a marketing move.
  • Stelvio Cipriani composed the score. The film opens on a notorious nightclub striptease in which Navarro performs in blackface and an afro wig — a sequence that has drawn heavy criticism from modern viewers.
