Death Weekend

• Shot for $500,000 between October 27 and December 1, 1975, with $250,000 of that fronted by the Canadian Film Development Corporation - a tax-shelter-era film bankrolled in part by the Canadian government.
• Carried the working titles 'Thanksgiving' and 'Do or Die' during production before becoming 'Death Weekend.'
• An early producing credit for Ivan Reitman, who made it through Cinepix in the wake of David Cronenberg's 'Shivers' before he ever touched 'Animal House' or 'Ghostbusters.'
• American International Pictures retitled it 'The House by the Lake' for US drive-ins and double-billed it with Wes Craven's 'Last House on the Left' as an all-female-revenge package, riding the similar title on purpose.
• The BBFC passed it nearly uncut only after Brenda Vaccaro personally went to see chief censor James Ferman to argue for a certificate; the lone cut they made was the word 'cunt.'
• The UK VHS was later seized and confiscated under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video-nasty panic.

The opening car chase is the whole movie's thesis in miniature. Diane out-drives the men and humiliates them on the road, and everything after is punishment for a woman who refused to lose. The siege isn't random - it's wounded male ego collecting what it thinks it's owed, which is why her final turn isn't triumph so much as the same machine running in reverse.

Fruet quietly indicts the playboy host as much as the thugs. Harry brings Diane to an isolated house to use her, treats her as a trophy, and proves useless the second real violence arrives. The film draws a straight line from his polished entitlement to the gang's crude version - two flavors of men who see her as property, and only one of them dressed it up.

The cold winter setting works as the real antagonist. There's no summer-cabin warmth to violate, no idyll to mourn - the lake house is already bleak and exposed before anyone breaks in. The environment tells you survival here was always going to be ugly and solitary, and that Diane was alone long before the men showed up.

Diane, a self-possessed fashion model, gets baited into a back-road duel with a carful of drunk locals on the drive up to a rich playboy's remote Ontario lake house. She wins the road. That's the mistake. The losers track her to the isolated property, and what starts as a weekend of seduction curdles into a slow siege of degradation, rape, and arson. Stripped of her host and her illusions, Diane stops being prey. William Fruet runs the whole thing on cold winter light and zero comfort, the survivor turning the predators' own cruelty back on them.
