Demons 2

• Shot starting May 19, 1986 in Hamburg, Germany and at De Paolis In.Ci.R. studios in Rome, the sequel rushed into production roughly seven months after the first Demons hit Italian theaters.
• Demons 2 is Asia Argento's horror debut, made at age 10 as Ingrid Haller; she'd already appeared in Sergio Citti's 'Sogni e bisogni' (1985), and her father Dario wouldn't direct her himself until 'Trauma' in 1993, seven years later.
• Bava and Argento deliberately dialed the on-screen carnage back from the first film to secure a V.M.14 (under-14 restricted) rating in Italy, softening the gore by having the demons ooze green fluid rather than spray blood.
• Effects man Sergio Stivaletti returned and built an animatronic demon nicknamed 'Menelik' for the picture, drawing 'Gremlins' rip-off accusations; his chest-bursting child-demon and the demon-dog transformation are routinely flagged by critics as the weakest creature work of the run.
• This was an early lead for Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni as doomed birthday girl Sally Day; the Bava connection launched a long Italian-horror career that ran straight into Argento's Opera (1987), then Phantom of the Opera (1998) and Mother of Tears (2007).
• The soundtrack is a goth/post-punk who's who over Simon Boswell's score: The Smiths' 'Panic,' The Cult's 'Rain,' Love and Rockets' 'Kundalini Express,' Peter Murphy's 'Blue Heart,' plus Dead Can Dance's 'De Profundis,' Fields of the Nephilim's 'Power' and Gene Loves Jezebel's 'Heartache.'

The swap from cinema to television is the whole argument. The first film blamed the movie screen; the sequel says the contagion is already in your living room, broadcast into a 'safe' private home on a celebration night. The demon making eye contact with Sally through the set before crawling out reads as a thesis on media crossing the last boundary into domestic space.

The high-rise is the real monster. Once the bile shorts the power and seals the building, the architecture does the killing as much as the demons do trapped residents, dead elevators, locked stairwells. The structure that was supposed to shelter a community turns into a sealed kill-box, an indictment of stacked-up modern isolation where neighbors are strangers until they're prey.

Sally's transformation at her own birthday party frames the demon as a coming-of-age horror. The party meant to mark her becoming someone is exactly where she's unmade, the cake reveal timed to her turning. The infection reads as the violent flip side of a milestone meant to be celebrated.

Bava and Argento took the cinema-as-trap of the original and shrank it into something nastier: a sealed high-rise where a TV documentary about the old demon plague reaches through the screen on Sally's birthday and turns her into patient zero. Bile eats through floors, the electricity dies, and the building becomes a vertical maze of clawing, melting tenants. A pregnant woman, a parking-garage full of trapped bodybuilders, and a small boy all become meat in the gears. No exit, no cinema, no rules.
