THEORIES
PLOT
  • Made for roughly $200,000 through the Canadian outfit Karr International Pictures and shot in early 1973 in Oshawa, Ontario, for a wintry rural-Midwest look. American International Pictures handled the release, opening it regionally on February 8, 1974.
  • Tom Savini did the special makeup effects here alongside Alan Ormsby and Jerome Bergson, one of his earliest film jobs, before Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th made him the name in practical gore.
  • Bob Clark, who'd worked with co-director Jeff Gillen and writer Alan Ormsby on Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things and Deathdream, was offered the director's chair but passed on the script, reportedly finding it too disturbing, and stayed on as an uncredited producer.
  • The film carries a fourth-wall-breaking framing device: a newspaper columnist named Tom Simms (Leslie Carlson) appears on camera and narrates Cobb's crimes as if reporting them, a device meant to lend the picture a true-crime documentary weight.
  • A prolonged dissection scene, in which Cobb mutilates a victim's corpse, was cut to secure an R rating; the excised brain-scooping footage was later restored in an uncut home-video edition.
  • Roberts Blossom, who plays Ezra Cobb, would later become a household face as Old Man Marley, the shovel-wielding neighbor wrongly feared as a killer in Home Alone (1990).
