Dogtooth

• Lanthimos shot the whole thing for roughly 250,000 euros, then watched it gross only about 840,000 dollars worldwide (around 223,000 in the US, the rest overseas) and still walk away as the film that put Greek cinema back on the map.
• It took the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, then landed a Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011, the first Greek film nominated in that category since Iphigenia back in 1977.
• This was Lanthimos's third feature and his first script written with Efthymis Filippou, the collaborator who'd go on to co-write The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
• The family speaks a deliberately corrupted vocabulary drilled in by homemade tapes: 'sea' means a leather armchair, 'telephone' means salt, and a 'zombie' is just a little yellow flower. The deadpan mistranslation is the engine of the whole horror.
• The parents invent an exiled dead brother supposedly killed by a house cat, which is taught to the kids as the most dangerous animal on earth, prompting them to drop to all fours and bark to scare it off.
• The eldest daughter trades sexual favors to Christina, a security guard from the father's factory, for two contraband VHS tapes, Jaws and Rocky, then starts quoting the dialogue, demands to be called 'Bruce,' and treats those scraps of pop culture as her map to the outside.

The corrupted language is the actual prison, not the wall. The kids could climb out any day, but they have no words for what's beyond it, so escape is literally unthinkable. The film's real terror isn't physical captivity, it's that controlling vocabulary controls the limits of what a mind can even want, which is why the smuggled movies, full of foreign words and images, detonate the whole system.

The ending leaves the eldest sealed in the car trunk because freedom inside this framework is impossible by design. She was told a dogtooth must fall before she can leave, so she smashes her own canine out with a dumbbell, still obeying her parents' fiction even in the act of rebelling against it. Whether she's alive or suffocated in that trunk is the point: she can only escape on terms her captors authored, which is no escape at all.

Read it as a parable about authoritarian states and isolated households alike, every closed system that survives by manufacturing fear of the outside. The fake predator cat, the rationed entertainment, the rewritten dictionary, the punishment dressed as care, it's a blueprint for any regime that keeps its subjects docile by keeping them ignorant, with the family standing in for the nation.

Behind a high wall on the outskirts of Athens, a father and mother raise three grown children who have never crossed the gate. The parents rewrite reality itself: words mean the wrong things, a house cat is the deadliest predator alive, and a dead brother haunts the far side of the fence as a warning. Discipline is delivered with a smile. When a hired security guard smuggles in a pair of VHS tapes, the eldest daughter discovers there's a world worth chewing her way out for, no matter the cost in blood and bone.
