Don't Torture a Duckling

• The killer is Don Alberto, the young parish priest, who strangles the village boys to keep them from sinning once they grow up and to send them to Heaven still innocent. That choice of culprit, aimed squarely at the Catholic Church, got the film only a limited release in Europe and kept it out of US theaters entirely until 1999.
• Fulci was reportedly hauled in over the scene of a nude Barbara Bouchet seductively teasing a young boy. He had to explain the close-ups: the boy's approach in the shot was filmed using an adult dwarf as a stand-in, and the charges were dropped.
• Carlo Rambaldi built the effects for the priest's death plunge, his face shredding against the cliff rocks on the way down. He worked uncredited here, years before the same hands won three Oscars for King Kong (1976), Alien, and E.T.
• Maciara's death is the gut-punch: a mob of village men beat her with chains and boards in a cemetery while Riz Ortolani's tender ballad 'Quei giorni insieme a te,' sung by Ornella Vanoni, plays over the brutality. The contrast is the whole point.
• The Italian title 'Non si sevizia un paperino' literally means 'Don't Torture Donald Duck' — Paperino is what Italians call Donald Duck — tying back to the Donald Duck toy whose head turns up at a crime scene.
• Fulci called this his best film in a 1994 interview, and it marks the turn where he started leaning into the on-screen gore that would define his later run. He also relocated the script's setting from Turin to Basilicata in the rural south for a setting nobody else was using.

The real monster isn't the priest, it's the village itself. Every accused outsider, the supposed witch, the idiot, the hermit, gets condemned on superstition before a shred of evidence, and the cemetery lynching proves the community will execute the wrong person without blinking. Fulci frames the mob as more dangerous than the killer they never suspect.

Don Alberto's motive is the film's argument about purity-worship turned lethal. He kills children to freeze them in a sinless state, the logical endpoint of a faith that prizes innocence above life. The Bouchet seduction scene and the priest's murders are two sides of the same coin: adults projecting their own corruption onto kids.

Maciara is set up as the textbook giallo red herring, the witch with her wax dolls, then the film detonates that expectation by making her death the emotional center instead of a plot beat. Read that way, the picture is less a whodunit than an indictment of how readily we cast the marginalized as guilty.

Little boys keep turning up dead around Accendura, a sun-scorched village in Italy's deep south where superstition outranks the law. A city journalist and a bored rich girl start poking at the case while the locals pin it on the easy targets: a woman branded a witch who dabbles in dolls and pins, a leering simpleton, a half-feral hermit. But the rot runs straight through the village's most trusted house. Fulci drags the giallo out of the chic apartment and into the dirt, where mob justice and holy righteousness kill more surely than any black-gloved stranger.
