PLOT
- Diana Dahlan is a thin fictional veil over Mona Fandey, the pop-singer-turned-witch-doctor hanged in 2001 for the 1993 murder of Pahang assemblyman Mazlan Idris. The real politician came to her for a ritual to make money 'fall from the sky,' was killed and dismembered into 18 pieces, and buried behind a house in Raub. The day after the killing Fandey went on a shopping spree and later bought a Mercedes-Benz and had a much-publicized facelift roughly two weeks on.
- Astro Shaw finished the film in 2006-2007, but Malaysia's Film Censorship Board buried it for being too close to the Fandey case and offensive to the real victims' families. It sat shelved for roughly 11-12 years with no official explanation.
- It only reached theaters because bootleg copies leaked online in early 2018 (FINAS flagged the leak as a serious piracy issue that February), forcing Astro Shaw's hand. The studio released it nationwide on April 5, 2018.
- Once released uncut, Dukun became a smash, pulling around RM10 million over its run against a budget of roughly RM2.8 million, including RM1.5 million on opening day and RM6.2 million in its first four days.
- Director Dain Said shot Dukun in 2006 as his intended feature debut, but the shelving meant his 2011 crime film Bunohan, Malaysia's Oscar submission that year, became his first released feature instead.
- The pre-release viral clips of a woman in a red kebaya walking a roadside at 3 a.m. were a staged marketing gimmick; the woman was lead actress Umie Aida herself, a fact made plain once the official poster dropped for the April 5, 2018 release.
