Dumplings

• Bai Ling's Aunt Mei swept the supporting-actress trophy on both sides of the strait: Best Supporting Actress at the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards (2005) and at the 41st Golden Horse Awards (2004).
• Christopher Doyle, Wong Kar-wai's longtime cinematographer, shot it and earned a Best Cinematography nomination at the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards for the lacquered, queasy color work. He lost that night, to himself, for 2046.
• It began as the Hong Kong chapter of the anthology Three... Extremes, sharing the bill with Park Chan-wook and Takashi Miike, then Chan expanded it into a standalone 91-minute feature.
• The feature isn't just a longer cut: Chan added an entire subplot about Mr. Li's affair with a pregnant masseuse, while still keeping the gut-punch ending in which Mrs. Li, told she could never conceive, aborts her own fetus to make the dumplings herself.
• The screenplay is by novelist Lilian Lee, adapting her own novella; Lee also wrote the source books for Rouge and Farewell My Concubine.
• It carries a Category III rating, Hong Kong's adults-only classification, and the supporting cast includes Tony Leung Ka-fai as the straying husband and Miki Yeung as Kate, a pregnant teen whose mother delivers her to Mei for an abortion, the fetus becoming premium filling.

The dumpling is the joke and the indictment: the filling is sourced from China's one-child-policy abortions, so the wealthy in Hong Kong are literally consuming the discarded children of the mainland poor. Mei the ex-gynecologist isn't a witch, she's a supply chain, and the more refined the buyer, the more she pretends not to taste it.

Mrs. Li's arc is the body-horror version of a marriage's collapse. She starts eating to win her husband back through beauty and ends scarring her own face with a self-administered cure, the point being that the youth economy never lets a woman stop, it just keeps moving the goalposts inward until she's eating herself.

Read post-1997, the whole thing is Hong Kong devouring its own future to look young for a buyer it can't keep. The city's nostalgia and panic get rendered as a recipe, where staying desirable means quietly digesting the next generation and calling it self-care.

A fading TV actress, terrified of losing her husband to younger flesh, climbs the spiral stairwells of a Hong Kong housing block to Aunt Mei, a former mainland gynecologist who now sells age-reversal in a steamer basket. Mei's dumplings work. They also cost more with each batch, because the filling comes from somewhere, and the youngest source delivers the strongest effect. As vanity hardens into appetite, the actress stops asking what's inside and starts demanding it fresher. Fruit Chan turns rejuvenation into cannibal economics, beauty bought one fetus at a time.
