El Espejo de la Bruja

• The film is a magpie's nest of borrowed parts. Its second half lifts the grave-robbing surgeon and the skin-graft horror straight from Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face (1960), then fuses it with the killer-transplanted-hands premise of The Hands of Orlac. Mexican Gothic in the front half, French surgical nightmare in the back.
• Producer Abel Salazar was the engine of Mexico's Golden Age horror cycle. He starred as Dr. Enrique in El Vampiro (1957) and produced the run of Cinematografica ABSA chillers that gave the era its shape. The Witch's Mirror is one of the strongest titles he put his money behind.
• Rosita Arenas, who plays the disfigured second wife Deborah, married producer Abel Salazar on August 1, 1960 - right around the time the film was shot.
• Co-writer Carlos Enrique Taboada wasn't just a hired pen here. He went on to direct his own run of acclaimed Mexican horror, including Even the Wind Is Afraid (1968) and the Ariel-winning Poison for the Fairies (1984), earning the informal title of the king of Mexican horror.
• Cinematographer Jorge Stahl Jr. shot the film in moody black-and-white, leaning on fog, hard shadow, and surreal supernatural tableaus to make the mirror's hauntings register on a tight budget. The effects are crude by design and still land.
• For US release the film was handed to K. Gordon Murray, whose English dub is widely considered a hatchet job that flattens the original's intelligence. CasaNegra Entertainment restored the uncut Spanish version for a June 27, 2006 DVD; Powerhouse/Indicator later included it in the 'Mexico Macabre' Blu-ray box (released May 29, 2023), drawn from the Alameda Films vault.

The mirror isn't a tool, it's the film's real protagonist, and Sara is just its hands. Every act of agency that matters flows through the glass: it shows Elena her own murder before it happens, it pulls her ghost back, it eventually causes the fire that disfigures Deborah when Eduardo smashes it. Sara conjures, but the mirror decides whom to punish and when. The witch is the medium; the curse is the author.

The two halves aren't a structural mess, they're the same story told twice in different genres. Act one punishes a man for killing a woman with poison and witchcraft; act two punishes the same man for desecrating women's corpses with science. Whether it's the supernatural or the surgical, the film keeps repeating one verdict: men who treat women's bodies as disposable get those bodies turned against them. The transplanted hands strangling their own surgeon is the thesis stated in flesh.

Deborah is the film's quiet tragedy and its sharpest read. She's an innocent grafted into another woman's revenge, literally wearing a dead woman's hands by the end. Read her as the collateral the patriarchy always produces: punished not for her own sin but for occupying the place a murdered woman left empty. The horror isn't that the dead come back. It's that the living are forced to become them.

Sara is a witch and a godmother, and when her goddaughter Elena turns up poisoned by her own husband, those two roles fuse into one long act of vengeance. Sara works a smoke-filled scrying mirror to drag Elena's spirit back across the grave, then sics it on the murderer and his new bride. Halfway through, the film mutates: the husband, revealed as a grave-robbing plastic surgeon, starts stitching dead women onto the disfigured wife he ruined. The dead, predictably, refuse to lie still in borrowed skin.
