Evil Dead Trap

• The screenplay is by Takashi Ishii, who created the manga character Nami back in 1977 and built his whole Angel Guts pink-film franchise around her as a recurring put-through-hell heroine. He carried the same name and the same woman-in-torment motif straight into this film's lead.
• Producer Japan Home Video first wanted Hitomi Kobayashi to headline. She was a top star on JHV's adult-video label Alice Japan, but director Toshiharu Ikeda didn't trust her acting, so he handed the lead to Miyuki Ono (as Nami Tsuchiya) and pushed Kobayashi down to the supporting role of Rei Sugiura.
• Critics peg the film as a straight cut-and-paste of Argento, Fulci, Raimi and Cronenberg, right down to the black-gloved killer and the eyeball-puncture gore. The kicker: Ikeda claimed he'd never actually seen an Argento film, so the giallo DNA likely came through Ishii's script. Tomohiko Kira's synth score is open Goblin worship, styled after the music for Suspiria and Deep Red.
• The finale ditches the giallo for body horror: the killer is Daisuke, whose murders are driven by Hideki, a parasitic twin with psychokinetic powers living inside him. Hideki bursts out of Daisuke's chest, wraps his umbilical cord around Nami, and Daisuke finally has to kill his own twin to end it.
• It opened theatrically in Japan on May 14, 1988, as Shiryo no Wana (death-spirit trap), and was later canonized for Western cult audiences through Synapse Films' US home-video release.
• The follow-up Evil Dead Trap 2: Hideki, directed by Izo Hashimoto (co-writer of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira), is a sequel in name only, sharing no plot, characters, or thematic thread with the original beyond the franchise label.

The film is a verdict on the audience Nami built her career on. She profits off strangers' grotesque home videos, treating real suffering as content, and the snuff tape is the medium turning the camera back on her, dragging the voyeur into the frame to be filmed dying. The warehouse is a TV studio that only shoots one genre.

The parasitic twin reframes the whole slasher as a story about a self that won't separate. Hideki is the buried, monstrous half Daisuke can never amputate, and the climactic chest-burst plays as the return of everything a person tries to keep stitched inside; the murders were never an outsider's work, they were one being failing to be two.

Nami's pull toward the warehouse, the way the killer addresses her by name from the start, reads less like a manhunt than a summons. The film treats her not as a random victim but as someone the place selected, suggesting the trap was laid specifically for her long before the tape hit her desk.

Nami runs a late-night TV slot built on the weird home videos viewers mail in. Then one tape arrives with her name on it: a woman bound, gagged, and gutted in a derelict warehouse, the footage too real to be a stunt. She drags her camera crew out to the location to chase the scoop, and the building starts picking them off one death at a time, each kill staged with the cruelty of a man who's watched too much Argento. What's waiting at the center isn't a slasher in a mask. It's something born wrong, and it's been calling her the whole time.
