Exhibit A

• The dialogue was largely improvised. Rotheroe handed the cast a detailed plot outline and let them build the scenes themselves, and the actors operated all the in-film camerawork too, which is what gives the footage its squirming home-video realism.
• It's a Bigger Pictures / Warp Films co-production, the same Warp behind Dead Man's Shoes and This Is England, shot on location in Yorkshire and Suffolk with backing from Screen Yorkshire's Production Fund.
• Director Dom Rotheroe came out of documentary, not horror. His earlier credit A Sarajevo Diary (1993) was nonfiction, and that fly-on-the-wall instinct bleeds straight into the found-footage frame here.
• The credited cinematographer is Rob Hardy, who went on to shoot Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Exhibit A predates that whole run.
• It won Best UK Feature at the 2007 Raindance Film Festival and pulled three British Independent Film Award nominations, including Best Newcomer and the Raindance Award.
• Distribution was thin enough that streaming service MUBI picked it up for pay-per-view in September 2010, offering it for three pounds a view, years after the festival run.

The whole movie is a confession tape disguised as a home movie. The 'Exhibit A' framing means we're watching footage that became legal evidence, so every cheerful birthday-party moment is really the prosecution's timeline. Knowing that recasts the dad's forced smiles as a man performing normalcy for a jury that doesn't exist yet.

Andy isn't a monster who snaps, he's a man strangled by the script of who a provider is supposed to be. The fake promotion, the pool he digs to inflate a house he can't sell, the refusal to say out loud that the money's gone, it's all male fragility doing the killing. The breakdown reads less as psychopathy and more as a working man who'd rather destroy everything than be seen failing.

Who's holding the camera is the real horror. The film starts as the daughter's gift and her point of view, then the lens drifts into the father's control as the family does, so the audience's eye gets quietly hijacked by the person they should fear most. By the end you're trapped seeing the worst of it from behind his eye, complicit in his frame.

A teenage girl gets a camcorder for her birthday and starts filming her ordinary Yorkshire family. Dad Andy's just landed a promotion, the bigger house is as good as bought, the backyard's getting a swimming pool to sweeten the sale. Except none of it's true. The promotion's a lie, the money's gone, and the camera keeps rolling while a man who can't admit he's failed quietly decides what to do about it. Every frame is shot by the people living inside the unraveling. That tape is the evidence. That's why it's called Exhibit A.
