Eyes of Fire

• Made for $1-1.5 million as the feature debut of Avery Crounse, who came up through still photography and had his solarized work run in American Photographer before he ever touched a movie camera - which explains why every frame looks composed rather than covered.
• Shot in mid-1983 around Stover and Lake Jacomo, Missouri, with the colonial settlement scenes staged at Missouri Town 1855, a working living-history site, so the cabins and split-rail fences were real period reconstructions rather than studio builds.
• Brad Fiedel scored it one year before The Terminator (1984) made him a name, and he'd go on to Fright Night (1985) and Terminator 2 - but unlike the cold synth pulse he's famous for, his Eyes of Fire work leans on eerie, folk-tinged, almost choral textures to match the frontier setting.
• Crounse's original director's cut ran roughly 108 minutes under the title Crying Blue Sky; distributor cuts hacked it down to the 86-minute theatrical version, lopping off around 22 minutes of connective tissue.
• After a tiny 1983 theatrical opening and a 1987 Vestron VHS, the film vanished from circulation for decades until Severin Films restored it in 4K for a 2021 Blu-ray that finally paired the theatrical cut with the longer Crying Blue Sky version, the latter rebuilt in 2K from Crounse's personal 35mm answer print.
• The supernatural imagery - faces surfacing in tree trunks, ghost figures blinking in and out of the woods, souls trapped in the bark - was achieved almost entirely with in-camera tricks: double exposure, negative exposure, superimposition, collage and strobe effects, no work farmed out to a big optical house, which is why the spirits feel hand-stitched and wrong in the best way.

Leah isn't the witch's victim - she's the valley's immune response. The film keeps her ambiguous on purpose: she casts a protective circle that saves the group, yet she's also the only one the land won't kill outright. Read her as the wilderness's chosen vessel, kept alive because she belongs to the place the way the settlers never will.

The horror is colonial guilt wearing a forest costume. The valley is Shawnee-forbidden ground, and the thing in the trees is described as born from the blood of every living thing killed there. The pioneers aren't fighting a random demon - they're being eaten by the accumulated death of westward expansion itself, the frontier billing them for the slaughter that cleared it.

Will Smythe's faith is the real curse, not the witch. He's a preacher who got run out for adultery, dragging believers into the wild on the strength of a God who never shows up to help. Every cross in the film gets inverted or weaponized; the movie reads as a quiet argument that imported religion is useless out here, and the only working magic is the pagan kind the land already speaks.

1750, somewhere past the edge of the colonial map. A philandering preacher named Will Smythe dodges a hanging and drags his ragtag flock downriver into a Shawnee-shunned valley that no sane tribe will enter. The land itself is the antagonist: faces writhe in the bark, dead settlers walk the treeline, and a feral foundling named Leah may be the only thing standing between the group and an earth-spirit that eats grief and blood. The pioneers don't conquer the wilderness. The wilderness digests them, slowly, beautifully, from the roots up.
