Fiend Without a Face

• Adapted by Herbert J. Leder from 'The Thought Monster,' a 1930 Weird Tales short story by pulp writer Amelia Reynolds Long. The sci-fi collector and literary agent Forrest J Ackerman represented Long and brokered the story's sale to the producers.
• A British production through and through despite its American star and Manitoba setting: shot at Nettlefold Studios in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, produced by Amalgamated Productions (John Croydon and Richard Gordon), released by Eros in the UK and picked up by MGM stateside.
• The crawling-brain creatures were brought to life by stop-motion animator K. L. Ruppel, working in Munich, under effects director Florenz Von Nordoff, while Peter Neilson ran the British practical-effects crew on set.
• The gore got it in trouble with the British Board of Film Censors, which demanded cuts and slapped it with an X certificate; a trimmed version had to be cut specifically for British release.
• Its London premiere at the Ritz in Leicester Square caused enough of an uproar that questions were raised in Parliament over why the censors had passed it at all, a decade before Night of the Living Dead made that level of splatter routine.
• The Criterion Collection released it on disc (spine #92), an unusually prestige home for a 1958 creature B-movie.

The monsters are the Cold War's id made literal. The station exists to point nuclear-powered radar into Russia, and the threat that erupts isn't Soviet at all, it's the radiation itself given a will. Thought-creatures that feed on atomic energy are the era's anxiety that the bomb wouldn't kill us with fire but would breed something we couldn't see until it was eating us.

Professor Walgate is the real fiend, not the brains. He drains the public power grid to amplify his own mind, then loses control and lets strangers die rather than confess. The crawling brains are just his ego made visible: pure intellect, no face, no conscience, multiplying by consuming other people's minds. The horror is the unchecked researcher, and the creatures only solidify once his secret is forced into the open.

The film codes intelligence itself as predatory. Every victim is reduced to the exact organs that make us human, the brain and spinal cord, and the antagonist is a disembodied brain that hunts more brains. Read it as a parable about knowledge with nothing human attached: the climax only ends when the reactor dies and the smart thing finally runs out of power to think with.

At a US Air Force radar station in Winthrop, Manitoba, men start turning up dead with their brains and spinal cords sucked clean out of their skulls. The base blames its nuclear reactor; Major Jeff Cummings blames the locals. Both are wrong. A reclusive physicist has been juicing his own telekinesis off the station's atomic power, and his pure-thought experiments have gone feral and invisible. Cut the reactor and the things turn solid: crawling brains dragging spinal-cord tails, swarming a farmhouse in a finale that detonates skull by skull.
