Frailty

• Bill Paxton's directorial debut. He shot it on roughly an $11 million budget and it pulled about $17.4 million theatrically after premiering at the Deep Ellum Film Festival on November 7, 2001 and getting a wide Lions Gate release April 12, 2002.
• Brent Hanley's screenplay won the 2002 Bram Stoker Award for Best Screenplay, beating M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, Ehren Kruger's The Ring, and Minority Report (Scott Frank and Jon Cohen) in the same category.
• Hanley has cited his Southern Baptist upbringing, The Night of the Hunter, Alfred Hitchcock (especially Shadow of a Doubt), and Leonard Cohen's 'Story of Isaac' as the wellspring for the script's faith-and-sacrifice spine.
• Despite reading as deep-Texas Piney Woods, the film was actually shot around Southern California, with the Meiks family home filmed in Sun Valley, California — Paxton manufacturing the sun-bleached Southern dread on the West Coast.
• Stephen King championed the film publicly, calling it unique edge-of-the-seat entertainment, and it carried on-camera praise from James Cameron ('electrifying') and Sam Raimi (the most frightening horror picture since The Shining) in its marketing.
• Matthew McConaughey took the haunted adult-confession role cast deliberately against type — just as his romantic-comedy era was getting started, not at its peak — with the entire 1979 axe-murder story unspooling as the narrator's framed flashback to Agent Doyle.

The film is rigged so you spend the whole runtime assuming Dad is a madman dragging two kids into murder, then the ending detonates that assumption: Adam erasing himself from the agent's memory and the camera static obscuring his face are presented as literal proof the divine mission was real. The horror isn't insanity, it's that obedience to a real God can demand monstrous things.

Read the other way, the supernatural 'proof' is the unreliable confession of a true believer, and Fenton's the only sane one in the house. Adam inherits the delusion, frames his brother, and we're simply trapped inside a killer's certainty, which is exactly why the final reveal feels both triumphant and sickening.

Agent Doyle being unmasked as a demon, complete with his own buried matricide, reframes the whole picture as a closed moral loop: the 'list' keeps finding genuine sinners, suggesting the family weren't choosing victims so much as recognizing them, and that the audience's discomfort comes from rooting against people who may have been right.

A rattled man walks into an FBI office and tells a tired agent he knows who the "God's Hand" killer is. From there it sinks into a 1979 Texas childhood where a widowed father wakes his two boys to announce that an angel has handed him a list: certain people are demons wearing human skin, and the family has been chosen to swing the axe. One son believes. One doesn't. The film rides that fracture straight to a finale that quietly insists the old man was never crazy at all.
