From Beyond

• Stuart Gordon shot the whole thing in Italy on the Dinocitta soundstage outside Rome, with a mostly Italian crew. He kept the budget around $2.5 million; he later said the same effects-heavy production in the United States would have run roughly $15 million.
• It's a near-total Re-Animator reunion: leads Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton, producer Brian Yuzna, screenwriter Dennis Paoli, cinematographer Mac Ahlberg, and composer Richard Band all came straight off the 1985 film, working again for Charles Band's Empire Pictures.
• Gordon fought the MPAA across roughly a dozen submissions to land an R. The board told him his cut had 'ten times too much of everything,' demanding trims to gore and S&M material, including Crampton's character biting down on Combs' distended pineal gland and Combs' Crawford lunging at the institutionalized Dr. Bloch, biting out her eye and sucking through the socket.
• The footage cut to satisfy the MPAA was thought lost after the original distributor folded in the early 1990s. More than a decade later a rough work print surfaced in MGM's archives, and the restored unrated director's cut was stitched back together from that beat-up print for a DVD released September 11, 2007.
• The effects were split across four separate teams, and producer Brian Yuzna admitted the money ran out before the finale's effects could be finished. Mark Shostrom designed the ever-mutating Pretorius creature, built as an animatronic puppet worked on a fulcrum rig with an operator inside running the head, neck and arms, plus air bladders that bulged Combs' forehead during the Resonator sequences.
• Lovecraft's source story runs about 3,000 words. He wrote it in 1920, but it didn't see print until June 1934, in the fanzine The Fantasy Fan. Gordon, Paoli, and Yuzna kept little more than the Resonator-and-pineal-gland premise and built an entire body-horror feature around that single idea.

The Resonator works like an addiction, not a discovery. Each character who feels it once needs more, and the pineal gland's swelling is the film's stand-in for an appetite that physically reshapes you. Crawford's growing third-eye protrusion and Katherine's mid-film hunger to crank the dial back up read less like science and more like dependency tipping into transformation.

Pretorius never actually dies. The Resonator doesn't kill him, it promotes him into the other dimension, and everything that pours through afterward is him reaching back for the bodies he left behind. The creature's fixation on Crampton's Katherine plays as the continuation of his appetites by other means, the boundary between the dead man and the thing from beyond never cleanly drawn.

The film treats perception itself as the contamination. What's 'beyond' was always there, brushing against everyone all the time; the Resonator just lets people register it, and registering it is fatal. The horror isn't that monsters invade, it's that the curtain was the only thing keeping anyone sane, and once you've seen through it you can't stop looking.

Two scientists build the Resonator, a machine that overstimulates the pineal gland and peels back the membrane between our world and the writhing dimension stacked right on top of it. When the experiment kills Dr. Pretorius and leaves his assistant Crawford Tillinghast raving, a psychiatrist and a cop drag him back to the attic to switch the thing on again. What pours through isn't abstract cosmic dread. It's wet, hungry, sexually charged, and it remembers Pretorius. The more they look, the more it looks back, and the line between curing the pineal gland and feeding it dissolves entirely.
